We Get Another Companion

The next day dawned bright and clear, the sunlight filtering through the trees casting dappled shadows across the forest floor. As I made my way through camp, my thoughts lingered on the events of the previous night, the conversation with Chris weighing heavily on my mind.

My footsteps faltered as I spotted Luke engaged in conversation with one of my half-sisters, Selena. A pang of jealousy shot through me as I watched her blush under his gaze, their interaction laced with a familiarity that left me feeling oddly unsettled.

Finally, she walked away, looking back a couple times at Luke. When I knew she was out of sight I approached him tentatively, my unease mounting with each step. "What was that?" I asked, my voice betraying the hint of jealousy I couldn't quite conceal.

Luke turned to me, surprise flickering in his eyes at my sudden appearance. "Oh, hey, Elana," he greeted me, his tone casual. "Just confirming that Selena is on our side."

I arched an eyebrow, my skepticism evident. "Adding more people?" I questioned, unable to keep the edge from my voice.

Luke nodded, his expression earnest. "We need an army," he replied simply, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

I bit back the retort that hovered on the tip of my tongue, the urge to argue warring with the realization that he had a point. The stakes were higher than ever, and every ally we could muster was a weapon in our arsenal against the looming threat of the gods.

Still, the thought of more people joining our cause left me feeling strangely apprehensive. It was a reminder of the magnitude of what we were facing, the gravity of our situation sinking in with each passing moment.

Luke's explanation did little to assuage my doubts, his words echoing in my mind as I grappled with the implications of his plan. In his eyes, we were warriors in a battle for our very existence, our allegiance to each other the only thing that mattered. But I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air between us. The weight of our shared destiny hung heavy upon us, the knowledge that our lives were irrevocably intertwined a constant reminder of the perilous path we had chosen to walk.

With a heavy heart and a sense of trepidation gnawing at my soul, I knew that our journey was far from over. And as I turned to leave, the weight of our impending departure settling like a stone in the pit of my stomach.
