02. lonely highway

____________

Ivy walked down the slim hallway of the train and peeked into each compartment she passed. She furrowed her eyebrows as each one was occupied with laughing and hugging students.  Her stomach twisted in envy watching them gush over each other— the girls squealing and the boys roughly hugging with a clap on the lack.

She didn't have lots of friends, if any.

She had acquaintances for sure, but friends?

Ivy never allowed herself to get to close on the fear of losing them like she lost them.

Her mother. Her father. Bruno.

She finally reached one towards the end of the hall
and was supposed to see one of the aforementioned acquaintances.

"Dorcas?"

The dark skinned girl looked up from her sixth year potions book in surprise and beamed at the younger Ravenclaw.

"Hey roomie!"

Dorcas Meadowes was a very bright and powerful witch. As a first year, Ivy often found herself wanting to be just like the girl older than her by a year. She was so put together. She always had her hair slicked back or in braids that Ivy almost found herself asking the older girl to teach her. Dorcas was spectacular at potions.

Ivy would sometimes spend time with the older girl in the circular and wide Ravenclaw common room, surrounded by shelves upon shelves of books, blue chairs and a ivory marbled statue of Rowena Ravenclaw settled between the two stairs leading to the boys and girls dorms. Ivy would look up at the stars painting the ceiling at night as Dorcas wrote her papers or brewed potions.

However, Ivy did not speak to Dorcas. She simply sat there and watched whatever Dorcas was doing that night and Dorcas would let her.

The older girl would mainly be the one speaking, rambling on about her day and her friends. She would often tell Ivy which classes were worth it and which ones weren't and Ivy would hum, storing that information away in her mind. Dorcas found Ivy's hums of acknowledgment comforting because she knew the younger girl was actually listening. She wasn't just humming or nodding to appease her. Ivy was veritably listening with the utmost respect and attention.

Dorcas Meadowes considered Ivy Bardot a friend.

Though, the same can't be said for the latter with the former.

Ivy was confused. What did Dorcas mean by roomie? She had a roommate, a muggle born witch by the name of Elizabeth Harris, Lizzy for short.

The two girls were lucky enough to only room with each other, leaving them more room for their belongings.
