A final screech echoes through Joeys last moments.
It's more sinister then the others.
You all step back from the edge and decide to split up again, you and Kolchek staying together and watching the cameras whilst Nick explores the area you were previously in. Eric decided to wander around.
Jason's still stuck to you as you return to the cameras, his hand resting comfortably on your lower back.
"I'm not seeing anything come up, but I sure can hear them." Nick tells you through the radio.
"Sounds like they're having way more fun than we are," you joke, responding back to him through your slightly damaged radio, trying to lighten the mood after just watching Joey fall to his death, whilst also being set ablaze...
His hand gently rubs your back, almost reassuringly.
"Long as they keep the party to themselves, I'm happy." Jason adds, "We've got nothing on the cameras inside, Over." he finishes.
He fully turns to you, hands moving to your shoulders, and takes your appearance in. More so the new wound laying on it.
"Here we are again." he mutters, moving you around so that he can search through your bag.
"What'd you mean?" You ask, facing him once he has the first aid kit.
"Me fixin' you up, could almost be a hobby at this point." his smile makes your heart race, sending butterflies throughout your body.
You laugh softly at his humour and pull down the strap of your tank top, giving Jason access to your shoulder.
"Shit," he grits through his teeth, "that's deep, how're you not crying or somethin'." he starts to gently clean the cut with the antiseptic wipes, following the same process he did for your cheek.
"I'm not gonna cry in front of you guys." you smile as you speak, not wanting to set a sad, sympathetic tone.
He stops what he's doing briefly to look you in the eyes, then returns his gaze back to the blood slowly dripping from your shoulder. "Did you- uh, were you... crying earlier? When we were placing the mines and tripwires?" He asks, talking close to a whisper.
His eyes stay stuck to your arm as you talk, "I wasn't really crying-"
He cuts you off, "But you were wiping at your eyes? You can tell me whatever was on your mind, you trust me right?" He finally looks up at you, his eyes look different compared to every other time he's looked at you, they look sincere, kind, loving.
"Of course I trust you, Jason. I just don't think right now is the best time to talk about it." you place your hand on his cheek, he leans into it as your thumb strokes up and down the side of his face.
Slowly, you pull him closer to you, guiding his lips to yours. He kisses you eagerly, yet gently. You can't help but do the same. Yes, you're with each other pretty much all the time, but the restricted contact has gradually started to become an issue for you both.
You break apart, very reluctantly, for air.
"Okay, I'm here for you remember?" he whispers against your mouth, then proceeds with the tending of your wound.
------------------
You newly bandaged shoulder feels much lighter as you make your way down a few steps to Nick.
"All clear for now." he informs, turning around to meet your faces.
"If they hit us, my best guess is that it'll be from the chasm." you suggest to them.
"If? You feeling optimistic?" Nick jokes, face serious despite the small sarcasm seeping into his comment.
"I tell you, the Colonel could lose his own ass if it wasn't pinned on him." Jason joins in. He looks down into the chasm, "You see our absent friend down there?" He looks to you two.
"Salim?" You question, he nods.
"Nah, he's gone." Nick finishes off.
"We're facing an enemy we know zero about. Enemy of unknown size, on their home turf. Sucks to be us." Jason tuts.
"I don't know how long the doors are gonna hold back those things." you decide to bring up.
Nick gives a solution first, "The radios our best shot. We fix it up, call in the cavalry. Even shit up a bit."
"Even if there is a transmitter up there, it's gonna have a limited range." you tell them, knowing you probably have the most knowledge around the technical side of things.
"One thing Eric did manage to get right about this shit show..." Jason complains.
"He gave us air support." Nick adds. "Lord loves a miracle."
"We get that signal out, our birds may be able to hear it. Still means we have to find a way to reach 'em of course." Kolchek smirks as the light bulbs go off in his head.
"One problem at a time." you pat his back with the hand not holding onto your gun.
You and Jason follow loosely behind Nick as he explores, both of you watching his back.
He walks up to a crate, a roughed-up letter laying on it, with a thin layer of dust encompassing the paper.
"Vampires... fucking knew it." Nick mutters. You and Jason share a look, his of disbelief and shock.
He gently returns it back onto the place and continues his exploration of the area next to the chasm, looking into boxes and small archaeologist's tents.
You all end up at the radio, you stood in-front of it, hands fiddling with the dials, "I might need a hand to get this up and running." you mutter.
Nick stands behind you, observing what you do.
You turn the larger dial clockwise, it sparks a couple times.
"That thing looks like it was sabotaged." Eric arrives, a look of concentration stained onto his face. "Why would they do that?"
"We gotta work with what we have." Nick tells him, still watching you fix the metal box.
"Fall back if anything moves out here. It's safer inside." Eric directs.
You flick a switch, the radio begins to crackle, you sigh in relief.
"Good job Lieutenant!" Eric smiles, his hand going to your good shoulder and softly shaking it.
"Yeah, well done." Jason adds to, eyes stuck to where Eric is holding you.
You look to him, raising an eyebrow. He looks away, starting up a conversation with Nick.
"Those things'll kill ya, Sergeant." Kolchek asks whilst you switch sides to stand next to Eric.
"Yeah, like smoking is the biggest threat to my life right now." He quips back.
Nick pats himself, checking for something.
"Where the fuck did I leave my lighter?"
Eric instantly moves his head to Nick, you look up at him, his gaze shifting to you. That's when it clicks. Rachel and Nick.
