Alex's first real encounter with Daniel wasn't marked by the dramatic flair often found in stories of destined encounters; it was, instead, a quiet moment that spoke volumes about their future. The setting was a family dinner, an event both boys were all too familiar with. These dinners were usually stiff, formal affairs where the children were seen but not heard. However, this particular evening was different.

As the adults engaged in their endless conversations about business ventures and social gossip, Daniel, with his characteristic disregard for the unspoken rules of adult gatherings, decided it was the perfect time to explore the vast gardens of the Ashford estate. His curiosity wasn't solitary for long; he somehow managed to drag Alex along, much to the latter's reluctance.

Alex had always built walls around himself, walls so high that even he sometimes forgot how to look over them. Daniel, in his persistent and often infuriating manner, didn't seem to recognize these barriers at all. He talked and laughed, filling the silent spaces Alex usually hid within.

The garden was a labyrinth of shadows and whispers under the moon's gaze, a stark contrast to the bright and noisy dining room they had escaped from. Daniel's voice, confident and filled with excitement about their secret expedition, seemed to dance around Alex, pulling him further away from his comfort zone.

"Why do you always look like you're carrying the world on your shoulders?" Daniel suddenly asked, his tone lighter than the question warranted.

Alex, caught off guard, struggled to find an answer. "I don't know," he finally muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. "It's just how things are."

"That sounds lonely," Daniel said, his voice softening. He stopped walking, turning to look at Alex with a gaze that felt too intense for the casual nature of their conversation.

Alex looked away, uncomfortable with the scrutiny. He wasn't used to being seen, truly seen, by anyone. "Maybe," he conceded, the word feeling heavy in his mouth.

They continued their walk in silence, a comfortable quiet settling between them. Daniel led them to his favorite part of the garden, a secluded spot with a small pond that mirrored the night sky. The reflection of the moon on the water's surface seemed to hold them in a world apart from reality, a secret place that belonged only to them.

"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Daniel broke the silence, his gaze fixed on the pond.

Alex nodded, allowing himself a moment to just be, to appreciate the beauty without the weight of expectations. "It is," he admitted, surprised at his own willingness to share in the moment.

They spent the rest of the evening by the pond, talking about everything and nothing. For the first time, Alex felt the walls he had so carefully constructed begin to crumble, brick by brick, under the gentle assault of Daniel's friendship.

As the night drew to a close, and they made their way back to the house, Alex felt a shift within him. Daniel, with his easy smile and relentless optimism, had managed to plant a seed of friendship in the most guarded corners of Alex's heart. It was a beginning, fragile and uncertain, but a beginning nonetheless.

The memories of that night would linger long after their paths had diverged, a reminder of what had once been and what could have been, if only...

As Alex stood there, years later, with Daniel's unexpected reappearance stirring up old memories, he couldn't help but wonder if the walls he had rebuilt in Daniel's absence were about to be challenged once again.
