1/-/ first day

Aurora's POV:
I hop out of my car and lock the door. I zip up my coat. It is freezing. I feel my phone buzz so I quickly check it, seeing the photo of my 12 year old daughter, Alessia, and my 4 year old daughter, Maya. The message is from Alessia. She tells me she arrived to school ok. I reply and head inside to get out of the snow. I navigate to the ED. I go to the nurses desk.
"Can I help you?" A nurse asks
"Hi, I'm Aurora Kennedy, I'm the new emergency/Trauma Paediatrician?" I smile
"Maggie, new doc is here." She turns around before turning back, "I'm April."
"Nice to meet you. Call me Rory or Kennedy, up to you." I smile.
"See you round Kennedy." April walks off as another woman greets me
"Hi there, I'm Maggie Lockwood, charge nurse." She greets
"Hi, Aurora Kennedy." I reply
"Rora?" I turn and see Will Halstead, who was basically my older brother growing up.
"Will?" I reply
"Hey Rora," he hugs me, "I've missed you, where have you been?"
"Uh, Florida, how is Jay?" I ask
"He's good, he is in the police department!" Will tells me, "he'll be happy to see you. Oh, How's Lessi?"
"Good. She misses her uncle will! And I also have Maya, she is 4." I tell him
"Well, I see you know each other. But catch up later. Car accident, rolling in 2 minutes!" Maggie exclaims
I nod and Will shows me where to put my things. We get ready when the first people flow in. I run forward as I see it is a kid.
"Talk to me!" I ask.
"Sarah Marks, 9 years old. Thrown out the window. GCS 4, intubated in the field. leg fracture, never regained consciousness." The paramedic exclaims, "heart rate 94, blood pressure 80 over 120, Sats 82%."
"Trauma 2!" Maggie yells out, "April!"
I nod and help guide the bed in. I grab the top of the sheet. April runs in
"On my count, 1, 2, 3, move!" We move her onto the hospital bed, "roll her!"
We roll her and the paramedics take their back board and leave. April hooks her up to our machines. I rub the middle of Sarah's chest,
"Sarah? Can you hear me?" I ask
No response.
"No response to pain." I exclaim as I check other parts of her, "ok,let's get a chest X-Ray!"
The technician comes in.
"Clear!" He calls and takes the X-Ray.
"Chest is clear. Let's get her leg re aligned." I exclaim and remove the splint.
Simple fracture I notice. I realign it and then send her for a head CT. I don't see anything abnormal.
"Let's get her to the PICU." I tell the orderlies.
We move her to the PICU where another doctor takes her case. I head back down to the ED. I see Will in the break room. I head in. I give him a hug
"Hey Rora." He smiles
"Hey Will." I reply as he kisses the top of my head.
He's been like a brother to me since my mom died and I lived with him till I was 21 and I went to Med school in Florida. A woman exits the staff bathroom.
"Will?" She asks, "who's this?"
"Hey Nat," will lets me go and gives her a light kiss, "this is Aurora Kennedy, she is our new emergency/Trauma Paediatrician. She's basically my younger sister. I took her in when her mom died."
"The Doctor Kennedy?" Nat, the woman, asks
"You've read my book?" I ask her
"Of course. It was an inspiration, you're one of the best paediatric doctors in this country. Can't believe I get to work with you!" She exclaims
"You have a book?" Will asks me
"You didn't know?" I ask him, "wow!"
"I've got a copy at home. You will read it!" Nat tells him
Will surrenders and we head back to the main area. My phone buzzes in my pocket and I check it. Lessi. She is calling me.
"Hey Lessi." I answer
"Mom! There's a gunman at our school. I'm hiding in the bathroom on the top floor right now!" She tells me panicking.
"Ok, calm down for me Less, do you have your medication?" I ask her, panicking myself.
"No!" She cries
"Ok, breathe for me. Remember, in and out. In and out!" I guide.
I hear her calm down.
"What now mom?" She asks
"Stay there and stay quiet." I tell her, "keep in touch with messages."
"Ok." She replies, "I love you momma."
"Love you too." I end the call,
"Everything ok Rora?" Will asks
"Call Jay NOW! There is a gunman at Alessia's school!" I tell him
"Wait what?" He asks, "I'll do it right now!"
He runs into the break room. I start panicking
"Are you okay Aurora?" Nat asks
I nod gently and run into the break room where my bag is. I fish for my anxiety medication and take one. I sit against a wall.
"Dr Kennedy? Everything ok?" Maggie asks
"There is a gunman at my eldest daughter's school." I tell her
"Go! I'll get a cover for you!" Maggie exclaims
"Thank you Maggie!" I grab my bag and my jacket.
I run out of the hospital and jump in my car. I drive to Alessia's school. I jump out and see Jay Halstead,
"Jay Jay!" I call out
"Rory!" He calls and I run to hug him.
"How is it!" I ask
"Ok. We've evacuated majority of the school. The gunman is on the top floor." He tells me
"Alessia is up there!" I tell him, "in the bathroom."
"What?" He asks, "sarge, my niece is in there!"
"We're ready to go!" Jay's Sargent yells.
Jay tells me to stay out and they run inside. I wait impatiently, worried. I see Jay run out holding a girl in his arms. She stands in the ground and I see it is Alessia.
"Lessi!" I run forward,
"Mom!" She cries and I envelop her in a hug.
She tucks her face in my neck. Jay holds her bag
"Shh! You're ok Less!" I soothe, "Jay, front pocket is her medication."
He nods and grabs them. He gives them to her and then I take Lessi to my car. She sits in the front seat and I drive us back to the hospital. We get out and walk inside. I guide Alessia into the break room. Will is sitting in there,
"Uncle Will!"  Alessia hugs him
"Hey Alessia," he hugs her back.
"Less, stay in here ok. I'll come check in you every now and again. If you need me, find someone at the desks out there and get them to page me." I kiss Alessia's forehead gently.
She nods and Will and I exit the room. I head and do my rounds. Will and I talk about a big meet up thing with the police and fire department. At 7:30, my shift ends. I head into the break room. I see Alessia laughing with another doctor. I go over and kiss the top of Alessia's head.
"Hey Less, let's go home." I murmur, "and go get Maya."
"Ok, bye Dr Rhodes!" Alessia grabs her bag.
"So you're Dr Rhodes huh?" I ask
"Yes, you must be Dr Kennedy." Dr Rhodes shakes my hand, "no one said how beautiful you are."
"No one said how handsome you are." I reply.
I quickly scribble my number on a piece of paper and give it to him before walking out with Less. We hop in the car. I start driving toward the babysitters.
"You like Dr. Rhodes!" Alessia smiles
"What, I do not!" I reply
"You saw him and became a beetroot." Alessia exclaims
"Ok... maybe he is hot!" I laugh
"Mom!" Alessia groans playfully.
I reach over and tickle her.
"Ok! I'll stop." She laughs
I pull up at the babysitters.
"I'll be back in a sec," I smile and hop out.
I run up and knock on the door. The babysitter answers.
"Maya! Your mom is here." She calls and turns around.
"Mommy!" Maya runs for me.
"MayMay." I lift her up and throw her in the air, "hey baby girl."
"Mama!" She smiles and hugs me, "I missed you."
"Aww, I missed you to bubs, say bye to Alena and we'll go home." I tell her
She waves good bye to her sitter and I carry her to the car. I buckle her in and drive us home. We get out, have dinner and all head to bed. Well, I put Maya to bed.
