PROLOGUE
Shaun shivered as the cold wind blew fluffy white snow off a tree branch and down his back. He adjusted the strap of his backpack with his thumb. His fingers were red from the cold. He blew air on his hands, and rubbed them together for warmth.
His heavy boots crunched through the snow, leaving a trail of boot prints following him. He could see the tracks of other animals too. He saw rabbit and deer, and there were some spots on the ground were there was a particularly lumpy part. Shaun guessed that those were from large clumps of snow falling from the trees.
On and on he walked, facing the cold wind. Then Shaun heard a sound like something soft being dragged across the snow. He got the strangest feeling that he was being watched. He stopped and looked back, but he could see nothing different. He decided he was just being paranoid, and kept walking.
Then he heard a growl. Shaun froze, and pivoted to see a huge grey and brown wolf snarling at him. He could see every tooth in the wolf's mouth, and they made it obvious that a wolf bite would hurt.
Shaun forgot everything he'd learned from his father about wolf attacks, and could only stand there paralyzed, as the wolf circled its prey. Only this time, it was him. The wolf's yellow eyes were locked straight on him and Shaun knew that right now, he was as much a threat to the wolf as a leaf.
Still snarling, the wolf took a step forward. Shaun panicked and bolted, winding through the trees, as fast as e could go. He could hear the wolf behind him, and it was gaining on him.
The wind began to blow harder, and blew the snow around so that Shaun couldn't see anything. It was like being inside a cloud. He ran blindly through the woods, praying that the wolf wouldn't catch him.
His boot hit something hard on the ground, and Shaun tripped. He landed face first on a patch of ice and slid. He put his boot down to stop himself from sliding, but his foot met empty air. Panicking, Shaun scrabbled to find something to grab.
As more of his legs slid into mid-air, he realized he was on the edge of a cliff. At the exact moment his hips slid over, the wolf came barreling out of the woods.
Then Shaun was falling. He twisted and turned as he fell, sometimes seeing the sky. Other times, the ground that looked so, unbelievably hard.
He felt no panic as he fell; as if he'd accepted that there was no way out of this. He decided that this was a nice place to die. Have this be the last place he'd see.
With a force that seemed to shatter every bone in his body, Shaun hit the hard dirt face up. He stared up at the wolf standing on top of the cliff, with its head bowed down looking at Shaun. Ironically, the wolf looked sad.
Shaun's vision dimmed. The wolf and the giant cliff faded to blurs. Colors swam together, and as everything turned black, he thought, guess you'll get your meal after all, wolf.
