Joseph's POV
I walked through the corridors of the headquarters, ignoring the morning greetings from my colleagues and all those words that they whispered when I didn't return the same enthusiasm . It was already past ten and everyone was in their overly cheery self as if there was something special about the morning. . There's always people blabbering ' good morning' , ' good afternoon ' or ' good evening ' . If anything ,I could only wonder what was even good about that ,or maybe it's just me who always fails miserably to find anything good in life .
I pushed the thoughts away and marched to my cabin directly.I took my seat and without allowing a second for peace to establish itself , at least in the environment that surrounded me , a knock announced itself and before I could utter anything or could at the very least allow the person to come in ,whoever it was , James stumbled into the cabin carrying a bundle of files and heaved it on my table .
"In the name of Jesus , What the - " I tried to speak but James occupied the room with sighs , trying to blabber something which proved to be a quite difficult task for me to comprehend .
" Breathe first ." I said to him and it seemed to work as he stopped pushing out words from his mouth which were not even understandable. It was a matter of seconds and he finally was able to catch his breath and took a seat.
" So , what's this about?" I questioned , and he appeared to be eager more than ever to answer .
" It's the fruit of all the hard work we have been doing these past two years . It's finally the time . " He replied ambiguously and it was natural to demand a better answer and so I did." Be specific ,will you? " I let out a sigh and he just nodded intensely.
"It's the time to reveal the truth about those rascals involved with the drug case we have been investigating" He replied and one could tell how overjoyed he was . It was evident in his voice . His eyes showed determination and eagerness , and I interpreted it as a sign to finally take the final step but before that I needed to verify things myself. As James continued to explain the details of our investigation, a part of me couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for the dedication and hard work put in by our team. Yet, buried deep within me was a lingering reluctance towards the idea of justice prevailing. It wasn't that I didn't want to see the criminals brought to justice; rather, it was the unsettling realization that justice often came with consequences beyond what the surface revealed.
I glanced at the files laid out on my desk, each one containing evidence that could potentially dismantle the criminal networks we had been tirelessly pursuing. But with every piece of evidence, there came a weight—a weight that I wasn't sure I was ready to bear. It wasn't just about catching the criminals; it was about facing the repercussions, the aftermath that would follow.
I leaned back in my chair, running a hand through my hair as I contemplated the next course of action. James, oblivious to the internal conflict raging within me, continued to discuss our strategy, his enthusiasm unwavering. And yet, despite his unwavering determination, I couldn't shake off the nagging feeling that perhaps justice wasn't always the answer. But for now, I had a duty to fulfill, and I owed it to my team to see this through to the end. With a heavy sigh, I returned my attention to the files, ready to dive into the intricacies of our investigation once more.
As James continued to discuss our investigation with fervor, a sudden commotion outside the office door caught our attention. Before we could react, the door swung open, and in stumbled Officer Smith, his arms flailing wildly as he struggled to maintain his balance."Whoa, watch out!" James exclaimed, leaping to his feet to assist Officer Smith.
As Officer Smith stumbled into the room, accompanied by the mischievous office cat perched on his shoulder, James and I exchanged bemused glances. While James chuckled at the sight, I remained steadfast in my stoicism, my expression unyielding.
"Officer Smith, it seems you've acquired a furry companion," I remarked dryly, my tone devoid of amusement.
Officer Smith sheepishly attempted to coax the cat off his shoulder, his efforts met with playful resistance from the stubborn feline. Despite the absurdity of the situation, I maintained my composure, observing the scene with a sense of detached amusement.
After a few minutes of futile attempts, Officer Smith finally managed to free himself from the clutches of his feline friend, who scampered off into the office with a mischievous
With James and Officer Smith's departure, the office quieted down, leaving me alone with my thoughts. The echo of their footsteps faded away, replaced by the gentle hum of the office's air conditioning.Leaning back in my chair, I stared blankly at the files scattered across my desk, but my mind was elsewhere. Deep in thought, I mulled over the events of the day, wrestling with the weight of our investigation and the complexities of the justice system.
Despite my outward demeanor of stoicism, inwardly, I was consumed by a whirlwind of emotions. Doubt gnawed at the edges of my consciousness, mingling with a sense of duty that compelled me to push forward, no matter the cost.
Lost in my contemplation, I barely noticed as the office grew darker, the fading light of day giving way to the soft glow of evening. Time seemed to slip away, leaving me suspended in a moment of introspection.
But as the night settled in and the office fell silent, a flicker of determination ignited within me. With a resolute nod, I refocused my thoughts, steeling myself for the challenges that lay ahead.
