This story is set when Natasha (Romanoff) the former Russian spy joins SHIELD, and when Maria (Hill) the former Marine and the current Deputy Commander of SHIELD. A decision that many of her fellow SHIELD agents disagreed with due to her being a female agent. It is a highly supported opinion between many agents that a male agent would be better in the position of Deputy Commander than Maria is.
Maria is known for being both exceptionally professional but also having a caring side too, especially for her female co-workers. Although it is just her and Natasha currently, she has had many female rookies who she enjoyed being in the presence of. Being in the presence of another female after being surrounded with exclusively males for months at a time is a pleasant experience for anyone, but especially for Maria as she highly values female company.
And to Maria's suprise when she meets the latest SHIELD recruit, Natasha Romanoff for the first time there is something inside her that feels different, but it's in a good way. There is a longing to be near Natasha, a longing to be around Natasha, a longing to date Natasha. Maria is absolutely infatuated with Natasha and she would happily spend every second together if it was possible. This crush makes Maria feel vulnerable in ways that she could of never imagined, she has never felt this vulnerable before and it doesn't even scare her because of how deeply that she is in love with Natasha.
Maria Hill is in love.
However this feeling is not reciprocated by the rather cold and rather distant Natasha Romanoff. Natasha doesn't see the need or feel the longing for romantic interaction with anyone. Natasha only sees love as something for children, a magical thing that is nothing more than a fantasy that children believe in.
Maria Hill is in love with someone who does not love her back.
