I woke up in Gojo's living room on the long part of his sectional. I lifted my head to see Geto on the other part. All the memories from last night slowly trickled into my brain.
Flashbacks of babysitting Megumi, getting hot with Toji, Gojo stealing my phone, the walk with Geto, and walking in on my 2 best friends having sex, all came back to me.
I put my head back down and picked up my phone. 8:16 am, Saturday, no new text messages. I can't believe I'm up so early after such a late night. I can't believe Geto started smoking again after being nic-free for 4 months. And all because of me. Sure makes me feel great.
I quietly got up, to not wake Geto and tiptoed to the bathroom for my morning pee. While I was in there I took out my phone to answer Toji's text from last night, "I'll come in better clothes this time, I promise."
I walked back out to the living room and saw Geto sitting up.
"Good morning," I said in a hushed tone and smiled.
"Good morning Mia," Geto smiled, but it faded quickly. This is the first time we slept in the same room since we broke up, and it wasn't even really together. I'm sure he's taking that thought well.
"I'm gonna make coffee and toast, want any?" I pulled my hair up with a claw clip.
"coffee sounds amazing," he rubbed his eyes, "black please."
"no sugar anymore?" I popped bread into the toaster.
"Not for me no, trying to cut out all the bad stuff."
"Oh so coffee is good stuff?" I joked.
I handed him his mug and joined him back on the couch. We quietly sipped our hot coffee. the silence in the room was a little uncomfortable. We never know how to just talk to each other anymore. I mean it's been a year, you'd think we've had figured it out by now.
My phone buzzed, "better clothes sounds tempting. curious to see what monday has in store for me," the text from Toji read.
"Boyfriend sending you good morning texts?" Geto joked.
"He's not my boyfriend."
"But it is a good morning text?"
I was about to respond when we hear giggling coming from Gojo's bedroom. They still don't know we're here.
Suki walked out of Gojo's room in his large black hoodie with the messiest hair I've ever seen on her. She yawned and rubbed her eyes as she walked into the bathroom, not even noticing us staring at her from the couch.
"...Should we say something?" I whispered to Geto.
"Let's just see if she notices," he sipped his coffee.
Suki walked out of the bathroom and turned her head toward us. She looked absolutely shocked.
"Mia... Geto.." she nervously smiled and frantically fixed her hair.
Gojo walked out of his room and threw his arm around her shoulder.
"Oh hi guys!" Gojo smiled as he put his sunglasses on, "did you guys spend the night too?"
"Yeah we slept out here," Geto sipped his coffee, peering over at them over the top of the cup, "We knew you guys were busy so we didn't want to bother you," he smiled real big at them. I playfully shoved Geto's shoulder, causing him and Gojo to chuckle.
"Ah so you knew! Were we really that loud?" Gojo rubbed the back of his neck.
"We came back from our walk last night and nobody was here, we checked your room to see if you guys were there and... well..." I tried to beat around the bush.
"We saw you doing doggy in bed," Geto got up to put our mugs in the sink.
"Okay well... well what about you two?" Suki got defensive.
"Suki, it's nothing to be embarrassed about, Gojo can be super smooth sometimes, and he's a really nice guy," I chuckled.
"Ahhh Mia maybe you should join us next time," He joked, causing Geto to make a noise of disapproval.
"Nothing happened between us last night, we went for a walk, and slept on opposite sides of the couch," Geto said to Suki.
My phone vibrated with a text from Toji. It read, "Thinking about your pretty face. don't think i can wait until Monday night."
I smiled, trying to think of a response to match his energy.
"Oh that's right, Mia has her new boyfriend," Suki crossed her arms.
"He's not my boyfriend," I glanced at Geto, "It was just last night."
"Well, does he want to see you again?" Gojo asked.
"Yeah... We're supposed to see each other Monday... but he says he doesn't think he can wait," I played with my fingernails, knowing this was going to make Geto upset. This situation pains me so bad because I am attracted to Toji and I'm really feeling whatever we have, but I never entirely moved on from Geto. I know he still has feelings for me too, and I don't want to hurt him. But surely he can't expect me to wait around for him forever. Right?
"Well?" Suki looked at me, "Do you want to see him again?"
I looked at her, and then at Geto who was waiting for my response. "Yeah," I smiled shyly, "yeah, I do." I saw Geto slightly shake his head in disappointment.
Suki and Gojo kept trying to press more, but I didn't want to keep talking about this in front of Geto. Plus, I didn't want to tell them at all about this. I mean, no matter what, I'm NOT telling them he's the father of the kid I'm babysitting. That would open up a can of worms, and with their big mouths, my dad would know in no time.
"Enough about me and my antics last night, let's get back to what happened with you guys. Suki you swore you hated Gojo," I flipped the conversation back to them.
"We were drunk, if we weren't in that state of mind it wouldn't have happened," She assured me, not realizing his arm was still around her.
"Oh come on Suki." he squeezed her, "That's not what you said to me before you came out here."
She elbowed him in the side and he squeezed her close again, causing her to giggle.
"Well on that note, I think it's time for me to get going," I smiled awkwardly at the two of them showing PDA. It was definitely a weird sight to see, considering Suki did not want anything to do with him two days ago.
"Mia, can I catch a ride with you?" Geto asked. He never had the money for a car, which is why this job is such a big deal, it pays the big bucks. That's another reason we didn't work out. He really needed to focus on his future and finding himself. I know that sounds like a shit reason, but it's true. He had no sense of reason. It was really sad to watch someone you love and care about so much, go through this spiral that simply was inescapable. And there was nothing I could do about it.
"Of course," I smiled warmly, and he smiled back, holding my gaze. He still makes me melt.
We said our goodbyes and got in the car. Our goodbyes were quick, I think Suki and Gojo wanted to go at it again.
"You still live on Beach Ave?" I asked him, starting the car.
"Yeah, still the same little apartment," he smiled a little, "Gojo told me you finally got out of your parents' place a few months back."
"I did, I'm also in a little apartment now," I looked over at him, who still had a little smile on his face.
"Is it far?"
"Nah. 10 mins from Gojo's place, 15 from my job, it's pretty convenient," I pulled into a parking spot right by his front door out of habit.
"It looks nicer inside now, if you wanna come in for a minute," He hung his feet out the door, "I have gummy bears."
"Alright you drive a hard bargain," I smiled and took the keys out of the ignition, sticking them in my purse before following Geto inside.
He was right, he really did a nice job decorating this place. The last time I was here was before we broke up. It was all white and grey, there was no real decor on the walls, just felt like a prison cell. Now the walls are a pretty blue color, and there's art up. I walked around the living room and kitchen looking at the walls. There were movie posters framed nicely on the wall above the couch. In the kitchen he had little fruit painting strung about. When I finally got to the fridge there was a picture of him and his parents at his college graduation, a picture of his cat, a picture of him and Gojo as kids, and a picture of the four of us. The picture had Geto with his arm around me, Gojo throwing up a peace sign and Suki with her arms up, all of us smiling. I took the picture off the fridge and stared at it. I remember this picture. We took this picture for my 20th birthday.
"Oh that's my favorite picture," He walked up next to me and looked at it with me. We stood quietly examining the picture, "Well, that's enough of that." Geto put the picture back up on the fridge.
"It's really cute in here, you did such a good job," I smiled at him.
"Thank you, my first therapist said I needed to take my space less seriously and give it life, so I did exactly that," He grabbed a can of soda from the fridge, "You're welcome to stay as long as you like Mia, I don't have work today and my plans were with Gojo, but he's too busy with Suki."
"Yeah my plans were with Suki," I chuckled. It was a little less awkward, but still felt off hanging out alone with him in his apartment, "I do want to go home and change though if that's okay, this mini skirt is not something I want to wear any longer. You can come if you want, see the new place, meet my cat." I smiled at him.
"Sure," He smiled back. He put his soda back in the fridge and then went to quickly change out of his clothes from last night.
We got to my apartment and he nodded and smiled as he walked in.
"Very nice Mia," he looked around. He saw pictures of Suki and I when we were kids, my parents, a picture of me and Suki with him and Gojo laughing in the background, and picture of me and Gojo in the woods from one time we went hiking last summer. "These pictures are all really nice. None of your new boyfriend huh?"
"Geto he's not my boyfriend," I insisted and he laughed.
"Hey, I'm on the fridge and he's not, that's all that matters," He smiled at me.
"I'll be right back, I'm gonna go change, make yourself comfortable," I put my stuff down on my coffee table and scurried off to my bedroom.
I put on leggings and a sweater and then to the bathroom to brush my teeth.
For the rest of the day, Geto and I just hung out. As friends. It got less and less weird as the time went by. We ordered indian food to my apartment for lunch and talked about our parents and school. I tried as hard as I could to avoid the topic of work, knowing Toji would come up.
At around 4 there was a knock at my door. I looked out the window to see Gojo there. I quickly opened the door and let him in.
"Hey Gojo everything alright?" I asked him.
"I've been texting Geto for the past 2 hours and he hasn't answered me, I'm getting worried about him," He walked into my living room and saw Geto sitting on my couch. He smiled at Gojo.
"Sorry Gojo, we've been catching up, I haven't looked at my phone," He laughed. Gojo walked over and sat next to him on the couch, relieved that his best friend was okay.
