After high school, Zemy and Mimi went to college together. Except they couldn't share a dorm together due to the universities policies and made a deal to see if Zemy is well behaved enough to be roomed with her next year (they were very strict on hybrids on campus). Zemy was orginally going to be roomed by himself but it was later decided he should be supervised. Duke was part of a group of students who would volunteer with this kind of stuff for extra credit for their resumes, therefore Duke was assigned to be roomed with Zemy. It was awkward at first since Duke wasn't used to volunteer work involving hybrids. On the other hand Zemy, being scared of most men, was scared of Duke so he tried to avoid interacting with him as much as possible. Duke was worried he must have done something wrong to upset zemy since he was avoiding him so he would try his best to have positive interactions with him. Zemy eventually grew comfortable with him as his roommate and they eventually started bonding more. They grew super close pretty fast.

Throughout the time they've been friends Duke would notice some of Zemy's destructive behaviors (self-harm) and he started growing highly concerned about him. He confronted zemy about this but Zemy just denied it or found any excuse.

They're relationship started faltering because Zemy didn't like being confronted or helped with his issues. He would feel guilty when ever Duke would notice any injuries on him. Around this point Duke had turned into Zemy's care giver when ever he would notice zemy was triggered he had found ways to distract him, mostly being childish stuff like coloring, playing stuffed animals or watching comforting TV shows. When he would do This Duke noticed zemy was almost nonverbal and have more child like behavoviors. This is when he had realized he must have been traumatized as a child and this is how he could cope healthily.

So this is how it was for a while, it wasn't like this all the time, only when ever Zemy was triggered by something.
