Coffee. That was all Emily could think about when she woke up. Sleep had eluded her the night before after Rose's death. In an attempt to distract herself from the haunting memories of the vampire, Emily decided to paint Rose's house. The beautiful landscape helped to soothe her troubled mind, providing a much-needed sense of peace. She had hoped today would be better, but it seemed the universe had other plans.
"Due to the recent tragedies that have affected our town, we will be holding a memorial in Town Square today to honor those we have lost. Join us as we come together as a community to begin the healing process." Emily walked into the kitchen just as John turned off the TV.
"Morning." She halted in her tracks.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice laced with disgust. John smiled and offered her a cup of coffee.
"Coffee?"
"No, thanks. We're not doing that. I'm not Elena. So I'll ask again: why are you here?" Emily narrowed her eyes at her uncle.
"I'm here to protect Elena. That's all I can say for now." Emily let out a derisive snort.
"Protect? Last I checked, Katherine cut your fingers off. How are you going to protect Elena from a thousand-year-old vampire?" She leaned back against the counter.
"I'll share more when I feel I can trust you." Just then, Jenna and Alaric entered the room. Jenna noticed John's presence before Alaric did.
"Oh God, I'm late."
"That's what you get for hitting the snooze button three times!" Jenna's eyes widened in surprise when she saw John.
