A Trip to Kanto - A Pokemon Story

Chapter 11: The Battle Mishap!

*Third person POV*

"Who's there?", Ash asked in surprise. Suddenly, an attack, which looked like Dark Pulse flew out of the bushes straight at Ash. "Pikachu, Thunderbolt!", Ash commanded out of reflex, and Pikachu successfully deflected the attack on time. "Who did that?!", Ash questioned with alarm. Just then, a Pokemon jumped out of the bushes. It was black in colour, with red eyes, and its body was sprinkled with glowing yellow rings. "Whoa!", exclaimed Dawn. The Pokemon was an Umbreon. "An Umbreon, huh..", Bianca brought out her PokeDex. "Umbreon. The moonlight Pokemon. A Dark type, and an evolved form of Eevee. The rings on Umbreon's body glow faintly when exposed to the moon's aura, and it gains a mysterious power.", said the Dexter. "Hold on, I know that Umbreon!", Ash said out loud. Then, out of the bushes, popped out another face, one which Ash, Goh, Misty, Brock and Dawn knew.

"Well, long time no see, Ash!", said the voice. It was a boy, fairly the same age as Ash, with grey eyes and auburn-brown hair. It was Gary Oak, Professor Oak's grandson. "Gary!", Ash exclaimed excitedly, and ran towards the guy. The two gave each other a quick high-five and a side-hug, and grinned simultaneously. "It's been really long, Gary.. How have you been?", Brock walked over to ask. "Oh, great! I've been continuing my research on Pokemon in the Unova region now!", Gary replied. "Anyways, how're you, red tomato Ashy-boy?", Gary teased Ash. Ash looked at Goh, his face flushed, and said, "Oh come on!", in a half-annoyed tone. "Red tomato? You mean the time when Ash sees Goh?", Dawn joked, at which everyone laughed, including Goh, while Ash just blushed heavily. Though, the Unovans had yet to meet the unfamiliar face.

"Guys, meet Gary Oak. He is the grandson of Professor Oak, a fellow Pokemon researcher, and a very strong Pokemon trainer too. Gary was my first ever rival. We competed in the Indigo and the Johto Leagues together against one another. We're also childhood best friends. We grew up together. And this right here is Gary's partner, Umbreon! He was strong as an Eevee, but he's definitely stronger as an evolved form of it!", Ash introduced. "It's really great to see residents of Unova here in Kanto. As someone who has spent his childhood here, I guarantee you, you're gonna love this place!", Gary hyped up the Unovans, though Trip still seemed very unimpressed. "Hey you!", Gary called over to Trip. "Oh, this is Trip. He's..my rival.", Ash said with a pause. "You seem like a strong and stern trainer. Wanna battle?", Gary asked the sand-haired boy. "No, thanks.", Trip replied, and began walking away. "Jeez, what's with him?", Gary turned over to Ash and asked. Ash introduced his buddies from the foreign region to Gary, as he kept getting fascinated by the Unovan Pokemon he was seeing. He claimed it would help him in his current research. 

"Gary, it's been really long. Why don't you and I battle?", Ash offered. "Umbreon versus Pikachu? I'm in!", Gary accepted, Ash jumped from the excitement. Trip heard this and stopped in his tracks. Maybe he wanted to watch the battle. "I'll referee!", Goh said. "Alright, let's go!", exclaimed Misty, as the gang headed over to a nearby Pokemon battle-ground. Gary looked to his Umbreon, "Okay Umbreon. We know how strong Ash and Pikachu must have gotten. We're going to give it our all!", and with that, Umbreon leaped forward. Ash knelt down to Pikachu's level, "Buddy, this is our chance to battle Gary again. This is the same Umbreon which badly defeated you when he was an Eevee. We'll do our best. I believe in you!", Ash's encouragement hyped Pikachu up with energy, as the mouse Pokemon got on all fours, in his battle position. "Ready? Battle begin!", Goh announced the commencing of the duel.

"We'll start! Umbreon, use Shadow Ball!", Gary commanded the first move. Umbreon let out a cry and launched the attack. "Dodge, Pikachu!", Pikachu's agile nature aided him in dodging the move. "Now, Iron Tail!", Ash readily ordered. Pikachu swung in the air, as his tail glowed a silver, metallic shade. "Chuuuuuuu, Pika!", Pikachu cried. "Detect.", Gary calmly called out. Umbreon's red eyes glowed pink, and it strategically moved away before Pikachu could strike. "What was that?", Cameron asked out loud. "That move is called Detect. It prevents the opponent from hitting their attack for the duration of their turn. I did not expect Umbreon to learn that..", Brock answered and commented. "Don't worry Pikachu! Use Thunderbolt!", Ash quickly changed moves. This time, the move hit its target. "UMBRE!", whined the black Pokemon, falling on its back, but immediately standing up. That showed how tough Umbreon was. "Okay, good! Now Dark Pulse!", Gary ordered Umbreon's signature move. "Pikachu! Thunderbolt again!", Ash said. "Pika-chu!", a burst of electricity headed straight towards Umbreon, but Dark Pulse and Thunderbolt had a tie, and cancelled each others' attacks. "Pikachu, Electro Ball, let's go!", Ash commanded his next move instantly. A sphere of lightning and sparks charged towards Umbreon. "Use Reflect! And then Crunch!", Umbreon formed a protective shield around himself, which lowered the damage by 50%. Then, he charged towards Pikachu with the move Crunch up his paws. "Intercept with Volt Tackle!", Ash commanded. As the two moves collided, Crunch came out on top. "Now's our chance! Use Confuse Ray!", Gary called out a move. The ray hit Pikachu right on target, as the Pokemon went straight of his senses.
