"Nick! Sunscreen now!" You sternly wanted your toddler, who had decided he'd rather get a 1st degree sunburn than take 2 minutes to let you put on his sunscreen.
He trudged back, with each step, he kicked up sand dramatically. "Mommy I wanna swim." He whined. You nodded as you wiped sunscreen on his arm.
"I know bub, just a minute and daddy will go with you." You told him.
Bradley wiped sunscreen on Maven's face, she squealed in response. "You need sunscreen Mavey!" Bradley laughed as he tickled her, trying to avoid a meltdown.
Once you finally managed to put sunscreen on your wiggly kid, he ran towards the ocean, and turned back. "Daddy come! Daddy! Daddy!" He yelled, waving his arms. Bradley laughed, and took his shirt off to follow him into the ocean. You picked up your daughter, she was wearing a small purple swimsuit onesie, and Bradley insisted on bringing a little sun hat she'd had since she was a baby, they'd never took them to a beach so they'd never had the opportunity to use it, until now.
You watched your husband hold Nick's hand as he gingerly stepped into the chilly water, watching the older kids splash and play. He pointed out to them, and Bradley spoke to him. You assumed he wanted to go play with the older kids.
"Heyy!" A friendly hand touched your shoulder, and accompanied by a screaming kid. It was your old friend Jackie, with her husband Matt. You had invited them to come with you, and they actually showed up.
They had 3 kids. Jake, who was 8, Leah, who was 5, and their newest: Macy, 5 months.
"Hey guys!" You exclaimed, getting up to give Jackie a hug. You motioned down by the water, "Bradley's over there, keeping Nick from drowning." You laughed.
Jackie sat down next to you, Macy was wrapped tightly in a baby carrier, she was a spitting image of Matt.
"Aw look at Mav! Hey girly!" Jackie cooed to Maven, who babbled in response, waving her chubby arm. Matt walked down to the shore to see Bradley. Leah and Jake ran beside him.
Bradley embraced him, holding Nick's arm to make sure he doesn't run into the water without his floaties OR an adult.
Leah hugged Nick, who immediately ran to Bradley's side, Nick was shyer then Leah and wasn't sure about this person hugging him out of nowhere. Bradley touched his head, comforting him. Leah ran after Jake into the water, but was immediately called back.
All of the kids ran back up towards you and Jackie, Jake was leading the pack. "Hi Maven!" He quickly said, then turned to Jackie. "Mom where's the life jackets we wanna swim." He asked. Jackie reached into her big beach bag, pulling out a grey life jacket, and a purple life jacket, handing them to Jake.
"Be careful, stay with Dad." Jackie called after him as he ran off quickly. Bradley finally made his way up there with Nick. Bradley dug through the bag you brought, and finally found Nick's toddler floatie.
"Are you gonna go play in the water with Leah?" You excitedly asked him, hoping to encourage him to interact.
"Yeah daddy will!" Nick giggled, "Oh daddy's going to play with Leah?" You laughed.
Bradley looked at Nick, "Me?" He playfully exaggerated his voice, making Nick laugh again.
"Mavey come in da water?" Nick asked, gently poking the tip of his finger into Maven's head.
"No sorry bud, the waters too cold for her" you told him, but he didn't seem to awfully disappointed.
You watched Bradley pick him up and take him into the shore, setting him down.
"Do you want to swim?" Jackie asked you, which made you laugh.
"Not in the slightest! I hate ocean water, it's just kind of gross!" You embarrassingly admitted with a smile. "I agree, and you can't see the bottom!" Jackie exclaimed.
Nick tiptoed into the water, clutching Bradley's hand.
"He's not going in." You finally said, Jackie laughed. "I'm sure he will, he loves the pool." She offered.
"He's like his mom,—" you started to say, while turned to her, "—he doesn't like not seeing the bottom!" You both laughed.
You watched Bradley play with Nick while chatting with Matt, who supervised his kids nearby. It was nice to catch up with Jackie, and let Maven see the water for the first time.
After a while, Nick got tired, it was approaching his nap time and he finally had enough. He ran back up towards you and sat down, followed by Bradley.
"Had enough?" You asked him, and he nodded. Bradley laid down on the other side of you, wrapping his arm around your stomach. "You too?" You laughed as you ran your fingers through his salty hair. Bradley mumbled a yes.
You put a hat over Nick's bead, hoping he'd sleep a bit. He didn't have a hard time falling asleep wherever, as long as he was laying flat he'd fall asleep.
Maven too was getting fussy, so you rocked her a bit, she fell asleep in your arms. Bradley grabbed the car seat from the stroller you brought and set her in it beside Nick, covering it with a blanket and putting a small fan inside to make sure she doesn't get hot.
Jackie and Matt had gone home, Leah and Jake were arguing and Macy wouldn't settle down. So it was just you on your blanket. You laid down next to Bradley, kissing the top of his head.
The sun was shining, the birds were singing, the kids are happy. Everything was perfect.
