X.O.X.O.

Lewis is gone.

I miss him already. The last two days have been hell without him. I want him as much as I do the others. Two nights without the calming rhythm of his heartbeat in my ear are too long. Yet, I know it's for the best.

He wants time to get his things together before he leaves with me. I worry about him, but I understand. Leaving everything he's ever known for a shot at a future with me is courageous.

Lewis isn't like the others. They came aboard knowing their lives would be different. Lewis is choosing to leave what he thought was his future for something else entirely.

Afraid they were tracking his phone, we stopped by a convenience store and grabbed several burner phones to communicate. Texting is helpful, but it doesn't hold a candle to hearing his voice. There's sadness in his tone, almost wistful when we speak.

Honestly, I can't determine if it's because he misses me or he's missing his uncomplicated existence. I am everything his mother and father probably warned him about. Complex. Lots of baggage. And somewhat emotionally stunted.

Shit. Is it even fair to ask this of him? Groaning, I shove my fingers into my braids and turn away from the window.

It's too late to take it back. I don't want to. I'm selfish, but I want Lewis for the rest of my existence.

Luckily, my lab in the Straits is nearly complete. The Syndicates I sent there a few weeks ago have successfully built the complex, torn it apart, and transferred half of it to its new home. Soon, I'll have a place off the books to go beyond anything I've ever done.

Perhaps, had I taken Ryker's advice to heart, I wouldn't be gallivanting across the globe by myself. In a few short hours, I won't be anymore. I'll be home—or near it—and if things go as planned, Chris, Charlie, and Michael won't be there. They'll be on the other side of the planet, chasing down a fake lead.

It should give me the time to. augment Lewis and disappear before they return. Simple.

Hey, you okay? -L

The question flutters my stomach. He's so observant and makes time to ensure I'm okay. I wish I was in his arms.

I'm good. How are things? -B

Good, nearly done. I can't wait to see you. -L

I can't wait to see him either, but I have to take advantage of his absence. Instead of moping, I slide a hand across the bookshelf at the back of my den and step through the hidden partition. The secondary lab, cleverly disguised behind the wall, lights up as I sit inside.

Truthfully, having Lewis in my personal space is daunting. He could stumble over all kinds of things he shouldn't see. This place is off-limits and with a biometric scanner, even if he pulled the book, it would come off the shelf and be available to read.

I spared no expense to create this little hideaway.

Blue lights radiate outward around my footsteps, trailing the length of the walkway as I delve into the white wonderland of marble and opaque glass. Cool air wafts across my bare feet from the air conditioner, bringing the fresh crisp scent of the sea. The monitors lining the walls come to life, flashing a bright blue before Iris' insignia loads across the front in pale pink.
