Rattled, I somehow got up from the floor. I stood in front of the door, which again read "Room 11". Had someone already been in there and heard the whole encounter that I had just experienced been over my head? If so, how on earth had they not come rushing out of there to save the poor girl from being completely and utterly destroyed? I shuddered and slowly opened the door. I was afraid of what this chapter would bring. I'd be stuck with that roommate forever. One of the rules of Aurelia Academy is that you have to be happy with everything, including the possibility of being stuck with a whiny roommate for the rest of your academic life.
The door creaked open from my slow swing. A particular odour hit my nostrils, leaving no room for despair. To put it simply, it smelled like a failed experiment with a fag. Oh great. I was stuck with a drug addict. I'd rather kill myself than become one of those people. I say that with a great attitude, as my upbringing prevented me from doing such things. At home, I'd get the back of my mother's favourite slipper if I ever dared to look up the side effects of tobacco. But that didn't mean that I would never be curious about the experience of smoking.
I took a single step forward, welcoming myself into what would be my new home. I looked around cautiously. I saw all sorts of band posters dominating the off-white walls, apart from the clear hotbox that had been created. I smiled at the sight. I accepted the fact that I would have to open up to people who were different from me. I loved that. Caution became reckless. My eyes darted around, taking in everything. From my roommate's Deftones vinyl collection hanging on the ceiling to little things like: mini speakers, a laptop covered in stickers lying on her bed, accompanied by a bedside table filled with tissues and a bottle of lotion. A small gasp came from inside me. A slight blush crept across both my cheeks, connecting the dots. Shaming her was the last thing on my mind. I had my own urges sometimes. I shrugged it off. I had finally found something worth rolling my eyes at. Dirty laundry everywhere, even in front of me. I kicked at it, afraid of what might be living under these piles that looked like they'd been there for weeks. I heard a giggle.
"Like our humble abode?" Making intense eye contact seemed to be the pattern for the day, despite my hatred of the whole concept. As I looked up from the floor, a desperate looking girl, who I guessed was about five months older than me, fixed her eyes on me. She was watching my every move. I gave her an awkward smile. I took my time to form a first impression of her. She had a pale complexion. This accentuated certain features on her face. The eyebrows were prominent and thick. She presented herself as quite charming with her round and upturned nose. Her wavy brown hair was tied up in playful braids. This added a whimsical touch to her whole character. She shot up and pulled me into the now empty desk chair she had previously occupied, dressed in a matching blue juicy outfit.
"My name is Vayda, but introductions are for later. First I need to tell you everything you need to know about this hellhole". She leaned down beside me, the tip of her nose touching my right ear, a sharp grin plastered on her face, "Starting with this "Death Note" I've decided to make just a few days into the school year, you can thank me later". "Isn't that a bit... extreme?" I turned my head sideways to get a clear view of her side profile.
It was obvious that I had made my first mistake. Vayda burst into giggles, which scared me. "Well, aren't you cute." Vayda grabbed the edge of the chair and shook it roughly. She was implying that I should join in her fit of laughter. Not wanting to appear rude, I joined in as best I could, which resulted in her turning the chair towards her and her placing both hands on my knees, confirming who had the upper hand here. Waiting for her to continue her conspicuous behaviour, I raised an eyebrow. "Fuck, forget it. It's almost time for the next lesson." Confused, I looked for the nearest clock on the wall when Vayda decided to grab my hand and storm out of the dormitory, leaving the thoughts in my head scrambled.
