The next morning passed quickly. I didn't want to delay with my chores, I had something pending, a curious and strange cooking class. I didn't have to, but I was a little nervous, enough to tell the chickens everything that had happened. I wish I had a camera at that moment because they seemed as surprised as I was.

I felt like a new stage had opened in my life. I no longer cared about my past life. Hugh was history. On the other hand, the relationship I had with Melisha improved subtly, but unmistakably. They were times of peace. The question was for how long. There came a time when I stopped asking that question.

"Oh, you're here, brat," she said, with a wicked smile. I came into the kitchen panting, rubbing my hands. She seemed in a good mood, and that was great for me at that time.

"I'm done," I said, putting on a sparkling clean apron. Everything seemed brighter to me that day. She looked at me with contempt, distrusting my word.

"Have you already done everything you had to do?" She asked with some suspicion. I wasn't hiding anything, I had been quick.

"Yes, I'm ready," I said, sure of myself. "What I'm going to learn to make?" I asked with some emotion. She smiled, shaking her head.

"Something simple," She said searching the kitchen drawers. "An apple pie."

"Sounds delicious..." I sighed excitedly. I don't know why I was so happy. I guess that after having freed myself from the chains of my past I felt light, eager to face a new life, new dreams. Some real ones.

"Uh-huh. It's Mr Tweedy's favourite," Melisha whispered, placing a bowl on the counter.

"Oh, of course..." I said ironically. "If the rookie messes it up, it's not a big loss, right?"

She nodded with a subtle smile.

"Exactly," she said, whispering maliciously. "Let him be the one who gets poisoned..."

"Don't you trust me to do it well?" I asked with some annoyance. I already knew it was going to be a disaster. I didn't need her to remind me.

"Not a bit, brat," she whispered as she grabbed two eggs from the cupboard, giving them to me her way, abruptly.

I stood looking at them like a fool. I sensed what the next step was, but I'm very insecure, I needed her to tell me.

"What are you waiting for? Break them there," she ordered me, pointing to a bowl.

"Okay, okay," I said tremblingly. It was the first time I had done something like that, and on top of that, her accusing blue eyes wouldn't leave me. I slammed the egg with all my might against the edge of the bowl. It broke, yes, but it almost threw the object away from the counter. I looked at Melisha with a shy smile. She looked at me, probably holding back the urge to laugh at me.

"But what are you doing, brat? You don't have to do it so hard. You're going to end up hurting someone."

"Sorry," I said embarrassed. She huffed impatiently, stepping closer to me, standing right behind me.

"Don't use so much force. If you do, the shell will break into a thousand pieces and believe me, you don't want that. Look..."

With a soft voice, unlike her, she grabbed the hand still holding the other egg, gently guiding it to the edge of the bowl.

That little physical contact was not abrupt or unpleasant, it was delicate. I realized how cold her hands were. I found myself thinking about it without meaning to. Better pay attention.

With a gentle tap, the egg broke cleanly. She sighed and withdrew her hand, slower than one might think.

"Do you see?" She told me, being too close to my ear. Her voice was neither gruff nor evil-intentioned. A strange sensation ran through my body. I thought she had much less patience.
