Today, we're gonna be taking about some of the characters and their design origins.
First, Gen.
Before his creation, I wanted something that would soon become Gen but I didn't really have a clear idea of it.
Gen's name and powers were actually inspired by the song 'I Wanna Be Your Ghost' by Gen Hoshino.
Gen's design meanwhile was based off of the Japanese singer Eve's character, Bun chan. Gen is basically a mish mash of music references.
Next Gentaro.
The weird thing about Gentaro was that he was never supposed to be a prominent character. When I was writing the Onigashima Raid, I thought it felt a bit empty so I made a character who Gen could fight, hence the creation of Gentaro.
I didn't really put much thought into him while making him because he was supposed to be a one off character. His name was created by just taking Gen's name and sticking Taro behind it.
Yet, readers (One prominently more than others) seemed to really like him so I stuck him around. The original plan was never to have Gentaro, Ulti and Page One join the crew. When that changed, I took time to flesh out his character more and he became the dry emo boi you know and love today.
Next is Choko.
I always wanted to write a Marine so I did.
She's mainly based off of Saitama from One Punch Man.
She was supposed to have a more cold, almost robotic feel to her, like an unstoppable terminator. But I thought it would be more fun if she was a gentle giant with a slight communication issue.
Finally we have Shuki.
Shuki has two main inspirations.
The first is Matilda from the Ronald Dahl book, Matilda.
The other was Tatsumaki from One Punch Man.
Shuki bleeding from her eye when stopping Avalo Pizzaro from crushing the Marine ship was a reference to Matilda where it says every time she uses her powers, the back of her eyes feels hot.
