Ethan Pov
When I saw him in the distance, he was leaning against the wall with a cigarette in his hand. His gaze was locked on the group of bikers outside our building. I walked up to him, tapping on his shoulder. “You like bikes, huh?”
He flinched at the touch but quickly calmed down as he recognized it's me.
“Are you ok, Pete?” I voiced my concern, but he shrugged it off with a nod.
For a while, we stood there in silence, then we went back to work. "Hey, you done with the presentation?”
“Yeah," Peter said blandly.
"Wow, dude, don't look so full of life.”
Peter forced a smile, and I know he again drew a line between us. It's easier to laugh when you're pretending and knowing that we both smiled.
Paul Pov
Paul was watching this from his cabin. He hated seeing Peter calm and came up with a plan to humiliate him.
“The sooner you break the soul, the sooner it will be yours, and I will break you!”
Third Person Pov
The day went by, and it was time for the meeting, Peter and Ethan made their way to the conference room. The freckled man seemed to be relaxed now, like he was back to being himself.
“Nervous Pete?”
“What? Nope, not at all. But you need to tighten your balls a little.”
“Rich coming from a guy who looks like a runaway bunny on sale.”
Suddenly, Peter remembered the morning incident. That handsome guy also called him Bunny.
“D-Don't call me that”
Their bickering was interrupted by Dalton clearing his throat. They both looked at each other, puzzled to see the director and head of the department standing at the entrance.
Peter Pov
“Good evening, both of you. Are we ready for the presentation?” he asked, looking in my direction.
Oh My God!
The. Dalton. Thomas. was standing in front of me, and he just greeted me! I couldn't stop myself from smiling. He looked dropped-dead gorgeous in that navy blue suit. I think my heart just skipped a beat. Ethan must have noticed me when he took the initiative.
“Good evening, Sir.. w-”
Dalton held his hand up and said, “In business, there is no sir, no ma'am except your clients.”
“Got it, Thomas, and to answer your question, we are ready to knock their socks off.”
Sometimes I wonder if Ethan was actually a friendly guy or a big idiot. As if he heard, he turned his head towards me.
“Excuse me", I walked past the awkwardness and saved myself. I can feel someone's gaze at me, when I turned, it was Ethan galring at me. Dalton sat on the big chair at the end of the table, and we started preparing for the meeting.
“What is he doing here?” Ethan whispered to me.
“How would I know?”
Third Person Pov
Soon, Paul entered the room with the clients; he introduced everyone and went straight to Dalton. Everyone from the team joined the conference and began the meeting.
As Peter led the presentation, Paul interjected with calculated remarks designed to undermine his confidence.
“I know you can do it without messing up, right?”After the presentation concluded, Paul couldn't let go of the opportunity to assert his dominance over Peter. With a sly smirk, he turned to Mr. Anderson, the client, and casually remarked, "Quite a presentation; wouldn't you agree, Mr. Anderson?"
Mr. Anderson chuckled, playing along with Paul's game. "Indeed, Paul. Quite interesting indeed."
Peter's cheeks burned with embarrassment as the room erupted into polite laughter. However, Paul's next words cut through the air like a dagger.
"Although I couldn't help but notice a few... shall we say, amateurish mistakes? But then again, we can't all be as experienced as some of us, can we?”
Beneath the facade of forced smiles and polite nods, Peter mind churned with self-doubt and despair. It was a subtle yet devastating blow, a reminder of his place in the hierarchy and the lengths Paul would go to maintain his power.
“What do you think, Mr. Smith? How did our little Peter do?”
The client chimed in, "There's a certain charm to Peter's innocence. It definitely adds a unique touch to his presentations, you would say.”
Peter gritted his teeth, his cheeks burning with humiliation. "I assure you, gentlemen, my capabilities extend far beyond my appearance," he asserted, his voice tinged with frustration.
Paul merely shrugged, his smirk widening. "Of course, Peter. But let's not discount the power of first impressions, shall we?”
Dalton, the head of the department, observed the exchange with a furrowed brow. Sensing the need to intervene, he cleared his throat, his authoritative voice cutting through the tension.
"Gentlemen, let's focus on the matter at hand. Peter's expertise speaks for itself, regardless of any superficial observations.”
Paul's smirk widened into a taunting grin as he seized another opportunity presented by the interruption.
"Ah, Dalton, always one to see the best in people. Tell me, do you also find Peter's charm…captivating?”
Peter Pov
I froze in my place.
Paul looked at me with satisfaction, but I dare not breathe in this suffocating air. His intentions were clear- to humiliate me in front of Dalton because he knew he was the man I liked.
A chuckle broke out in the room, “What I mean was, do you think he has what it takes to lead our team to success?”
Dalton's expression hardened, his authority asserting itself. "Paul, this discussion is irrelevant to the matter at hand. Let's stay focused."
My heart pounded in my chest, I wanted to escape, yet a part of me yearned for Dalton's response.
Third Person Pov
As the meeting drew to a close, the atmosphere shifted from tension to relief as the team secured the deal. Dalton's congratulatory words rang out, his authoritative voice carrying a sense of accomplishment.
"Well done, everyone," he praised, his gaze lingering on Peter with a warmth that sent butterflies fluttering in Peter's stomach.
Peter's heart swelled with pride at Dalton's acknowledgment, a glimmer of validation amidst the earlier humiliation. He exchanged relieved smiles with his colleagues, a shared sense of triumph evident in their eyes.
Dalton made a proposition that lifted the spirits of the weary team. "How about we celebrate our success with drinks?" he suggested, his voice carrying a hint of excitement.
"There's a cozy bar nearby where we can let loose", Ethan jumped in.
Peter was thrilled at the chance to spend more time with Dalton outside of work, as his mind was already envisioning the night ahead.
