Stay the Night

Can nibbled anxiously on his food while glancing at Tin, who seemed to be enjoying the meal he had cooked. Originally, he had planned to take Tee to a burger joint, but he changed his mind at the last minute and decided to whip up something for Tin instead, knowing that the older man would be home late and probably hadn't eaten. Being asked to stay was unexpected, as Tin didn't usually extend such invitations, even when Can spent the night.

"This is good...Is there anything you're not talented at, Can?"

"Hmm, lots of things. I'm lousy at a lot of things..." Can felt his cheeks flush with warmth, a soft shade of pink, as he attempted to concentrate on the delicious meal he had prepared. Despite his efforts, he managed to maintain the playful banter he had cultivated with his boss over the past few months of their acquaintance. "Not like you, the youngest criminal lawyer in Thailand. And the youngest judge. You must be a prodigy..."

"I just really wanted to study law..." Tin let out a modest chuckle, a hint of blush appearing on his cheeks. Can smiled, nodding slowly as he twirled his chopsticks, contemplating whether it was appropriate to finally ask the question that had been nagging at him since childhood.

"Why law though? You're amazing at everything you do. Why law?"

"I want to help people..." Tin nonchalantly repeated his usual spiel in front of the microphones and cameras, leaving Can feeling slightly let down. However, just when Can thought it was going to be the same old routine, Tin surprised him by bursting into laughter and making a funny face before saying something completely unexpected. "But the truth is I would be lying if I said it was all I wanted to do..."

"So why did you?"

"Hmm...Something happened when I was around eighteen" Tin poured them both some cold tea, reclining in his chair with a sense of calm as his gaze drifted into the past. Can found himself leaning in with curiosity, eager to hear more.

"My father was furious when I mentioned the possibility of pursuing something other than law. To make his point clear, he insisted that I accompany him to work several times during the summer break before college began." Tin's face wrinkled a little as his smile faded but he continued his story that was eerily familiar but at the same time completely different

"The outcome was completely different from what he had hoped for. Every single thing I witnessed there only strengthened my belief that pursuing a career in law was not my true calling. However, during one visit to the police station, something unexpected happened. I encountered a young child, perhaps even younger than Tee is now." Can almost choked at that until he remembered that he had been a small kid smaller than his age anyway "His parents were murdered, and there was a serious risk that the perpetrator could escape justice. I pleaded with my father to handle the case. He accepted, but only if I pursued a career in law. And I did, and justice was served as the man was sentenced to life in prison...."

"You...Were blacked mailed..." Tears threatened to spill from his eyes, but he held them back, opting to simply shake his head in response.

Tin chuckled softly, a mischievous glint in his eyes as he admitted, "Bribed, but you know what? I don't regret it at all..." He gave a nonchalant shrug, gently swirling his tea cup in his hands. "My life revolves around the law, and I take pride in that. Wouldn't trade it for the world.".

Can's eyes sparkled with unshed tears as he smiled, "I'm so happy..." He quickly composed himself, wiping away any sign of emotion. "I wouldn't have met you or Tee if it weren't for this." He glanced at the dirty pots and sighed, "I should clean these and head home..."

"Can, please... Stay here tonight."

"The...The night...?"

Tin's blissful thoughts were abruptly interrupted by a sudden, frightened squeak from Can. Blinking rapidly, Tin struggled to regain his composure and respond. "Now, I'm sorry...I mean. Uhm. It's late...Stay...The sofa...I would never suggest..."

"O-of course...I knew what you meant..." Can, still in shock, managed to muster a smile as he gently tousled the back of his neck. Tin couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt as he observed the trusting expression on Can's face. It was difficult to fathom that Can would never suspect the truth behind Tin's intentions. Despite the facade, Tin was haunted by both thoughts and dreams about the man who seamlessly integrated into his family. As he set his chopsticks down on the rests, Tin offered a smile, concealing the complexity of his emotions.

"Please...I dislike the idea of you going home so late..." Tin hummed, a smile playing on his lips as he secretly wished he could voice the thought swirling in his mind - the desire to keep the youth by his side, never leaving the house.

Having Tee around all the time would bring a refreshing change, one that Tin would wholeheartedly embrace. The boy would surely be thrilled with the idea. However, Tin was well aware that this dream was far from attainable, and he had to find contentment in the present. But deep down, he knew he wouldn't be truly happy when Can eventually revealed that he would be spending less time with them due to his newfound girlfriend.

"I would be happy to stay, Mr. Medthanan..." Can flashed a smile, causing Tin's heart to skip a beat as he secretly hoped for something more. However, he quickly pushed aside those thoughts, responding with a smile of his own while tilting his head and humming a tune.

"Tin...Please call me Tin, we're friends aren't we? If you can't do it in the office at least do it when we're here..."

"Then Tin...Thank you...I'll get up early in the morning and get myself some clothes..." Can stood up from his chair and started stacking the dishes, adding, "But for now, I'll take care of the pots."

"I'll take care of them, you cooked dinner so the least I can do is clean up..." Tin stood up swiftly and clasped onto the tiny and adorable hands, with a smile on his face, as Can whispered..

"My job..."

"Your job ends when I say it has and I've said that it's ended so please go and make yourself comfortable while I do the dishes..." Tin made it clear that Can's job was over when Tin said so, and since Tin had already declared it finished, Can was instructed to relax while Tin took care of the dishes. Can knew there was no point in arguing with Tin's firm tone, as any excuse Can could come up with would just seem ridiculous.

Tin took charge of drafting the job contract and made sure dishwashing was not included. Can responded with a slight smile, nodding his head, and then made his way to the living room where he settled on the sofa that would serve as his bed for the night. Meanwhile, Tin swiftly gathered the used dishes and washed them in no time. Afterward, he joined Can on the sofa, both of them engrossed in the TV screen. "What are we watching?"

"Something with comedians..." Can shrugged his eyes not leaving the screen while his ears burnt brightly.

"Right..." Tin gave a nod before bursting into laughter at the funny things happening on the screen. Despite having a pile of files to go through, he didn't care about any of it at that moment. He was simply delighted to be sitting with Can, enjoying the TV show. The joy multiplied when Tee emerged from his room and snuggled up with them, draping his small blue blanket over their legs.
