When Jordyn finally woke up, Mega was M.I.A. She thought maybe he was in the bathroom or something, but she didn't hear him moving around so that was quickly ruled out.
After savoring the feeling of his sheets for a few minutes more, she decided to get up and go check on her mom. Pauline could take care of herself, as long as she wasn't left alone overnight, but Jordyn still made it her business to make sure she was good. No matter how much it got on her nerves at times, she loved her mama.
On her way to her moms room she reminded herself to go grab her phone, so she could call Mega and see where he was. Until she heard him laughing. At first, she didn't know where his voice was coming from, but the closer she got to the hallway where the extra rooms were, she realized it was coming from the room her mom was in.
"I got somebody coming here to see you." He said, exhaling smoke and then passing the blunt over to Pauline.
"Oh yeah?" she pulled, "who? And damn!" she nodded and coughed, "this some good ass weed."
"Nothing but the best, baby! You already know! But listen, I got my mom dropping by to check you out. She's a nurse. I ain't tryna get in your business or nothing, but Jordyn told me some things and I know a few people, so we can get you looked at and taken care of while y'all here."
Hearing that brought tears to Pauline's eyes. And Jordyn's, who was standing outside the door eavesdropping on their conversation.
"Young man." Pauline paused to get the shaking in her voice under control. "I thank you so much. I don't know what brought you into my life, but I believe you were sent to me for a reason. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the things you've done for me and my daughter thus far."
"I just pay it forward. That's the way my mama raised me."
"I can't wait to meet her."
Jordyn hid in the hallway until she was able to stop the tears streaming down her cheeks. No one, not even their own flesh and blood, thought to be a help to her and her mother the way Mega had. And for that she felt like he deserved something special from her.
"I see y'all just done became the best of friends, huh?" she walked in, sat on his lap and pulled her feet up.
"Yeah." He smiled and wrapped an arm around her. "We pretty cool. She was tryna give me a hard time when we first met, but we good now. Ain't that right, Paulie D?"
"That's right." She passed him the blunt again. "This my nigga right here."
"MA!" Jordyn fell out laughing. "Chill out! This weed got you tripping."
"Nahhh, this weed got me RIGHT!"
"Oh Lord." Jordyn buried her face in Mega's chest. "What have you done to my mom?"
The feeling of her face in his chest gave him a feeling of comfort he'd never felt from a woman. He didn't know why and he didn't question it either. He let himself relax and enjoy the time they shared.
"Let me up real quick, I gotta go answer the door."
Jordyn already knew who it was, so when he left the room she went to put on some decent clothes. She was nervous about the visit that was basically a consultation because it had been a while since she had been able to take her mom to the doctor. They didn't know whether her cancer had progressed, regressed, nothing. Pauline could have fallen on her death bed that day or the next, and they would have never seen it coming.
"Hey, ma." He greeted her with a hug and kiss on the cheek.
"Hey, baby. What's up? What we doing today?"
