WE LOOK FORWARD tothe moment when the necessity of a plan and a career path is settled in our lives; along with it is the smell of childhood evaporating into the air. Once those plans are made, they are set in motion. We begin to live every day in service of that predetermined purpose—to ensure that dreams and goals are eventually fulfilled—for a life that has not yet existed.
But every once in a while, we take a pause from our journey to look back from where we came from and only then notice the other roads that digress from the track that we've mapped out.
So how do you take a step forward to a future you are uncertain of? How do you mourn the loss of what could've been?
"I'm back!" a husky voice echoes along with the flutter of red wings.
"Oh! Oh?! And where were you, number two?" replied a tall, well-built man dressed in a purple, skin-tight bodysuit with black arrow-like markings across his chest, better known as the pro hero Slidin' Go.
"That black sludge you got here is not for me," Hawks said as his feet reached the ground. "Just getting some proper coffee."
"Next time ask for permission first! We can't have you flying around all willy-nilly!" Slidin' Go scolded with hands curled firmly on his waist in disapproval.
Hawks simply shrugged his shoulders. "Huh? Isn't the Liberation Army all about giving people freedom?"
"In the liberation front, I rank higher than you, Hawks! And I'm older!"
"Yes, sir!" the winged pro hero saluted comically.
Just as the other pro hero was about to reply, a new voice interrupts, "What's this about you ranking higher, Slidin' Go? First I've heard of that!"
Both pro heroes turned around to see a tall and lanky man with long, shiny hair dressed in all black emerged from the crowd. "I suppose you're influential enough to spread the liberation ideals throughout society. Nobody told me you were an important player who could extract intel from the biggest heroes out there!"
Hawks takes out the coffee can he bought from his pocket, undeterred by this man's, who he knows is named Skeptic, sudden appearance. "Global tracking! Every communication recorded! Live feeds of his conversations! And what he's seeing! These twenty micro devices planted on Hawks... You, Slidin', are a pawn capable of browsing the hero network and nothing more! But Hawks's reach extends deeper!...Will expose the heroes!"
The aforementioned man gently flapped his wings instinctively as if to show off the tiny circular devices clipped to his wings. Despite his calm and unreadable countenance, Hawks knew this was one of his biggest problems yet and, if not addressed immediately, could lead to more difficulties.
He knew only one person could help him solve this problem, but that was a turbulent river he was not ready to sail into. Just the thought of her makes his stomach churn from feelings he refuses to name.
