On a train a man sits patiently. His name? Naoya Zenin. A foreigner from outside the city on a mission from his father, head of the Zenin clan. His destination? Well, it's-
Conductor: NEXT STOP, ACADEMY CITY!!!
Academy City, home to espers and mages alike. The city is one of the few locations in the world where science and magic live together in peace.
The train stops at a station in the city...
Naoya: This seems to be the right stop
He looks around and takes in the scenery
Naoya: (This place looks like a complete dump, why did I have to be the one to take care of this mess?)
He travels until he arrives at the largest hospital in Academy City...
He traverses the many stairwells and hallways until he arrives at the second-to-last door on the highest floor.
Once he opens the door he sees a small elderly lady, way beyond the normal lifespan of a person, lying in the hospital bed with a ginormous grin on her face.
Old Woman: Naoya you made it! Come give me a kiss!
She shoots up rapidly and tries to kiss him on the cheek.
*CRASH!
Naoya grabs the woman by the wrist and masterfully throws her back onto her hospital bed in the span of a second!
Naoya: Shut it old hag! What's so important that I needed to fly out of here personally!
Old Woman: Now now! That's no way to talk to your ailing grandma is it? It's almost like you don't wish to see me... Also HOW COULD YOU THROW YOUR OWN GRANDMOTHER! WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO DO KILL ME?!
Naoya: This is a waste of time, I'm out of here!
He turns around and starts walking towards the door.
Old Woman: Naoya, Wait! I have something for you!
Naoya: Oh please! What could a poor woman like yourself possibly offer me
Old Woman: Your father is deciding between you and your brothers for an heir to the Zenin clan correct? Who better to put in a good word for you than your grandmother!
Naoya pauses, then turns around and starts walking back to the woman.
Naoya: Go on...
Old Woman: I need you to take care of some business for me. I have a fruit stand you see-
Naoya: A FRUIT STAND!
He starts to leave again until the woman grabs his shirt sleeve.
Old Woman: YES! And it needs to be taken care of, you see. It's the only way I can afford to keep paying the hospital bills and-
Naoya: I can just pay the bills. If that's all I'll be on my way-
He slaps her hand off his wrist.
Old Woman: No!
Old Woman: Sorry for yelling, it's just this stand has a lot of sentimental value for me. See, I don't have much time left and the hospital insists that I stay here for another three weeks. If you can keep the stand running until I get out you have my word that I will recommend you as the next heir!
Naoya's face was filled with shock, but was just as quickly replaced by a devious grin.
Naoya: Well... If you really need me that badly how could I refuse? After all, a little labor never killed anybody and what kind of grandson would I be if I didn't accept my poor grandmother's request?
The old woman sits up ecstatically and begins to clap as if she just finished watching a Broadway show.
Old Woman: Oh Great! By the way don't think of taking any short cuts. I already told all of the other local shopkeepers that you'd be watching my store and to let me know if you start slacking.
Naoya Grimaces at the comment.
Naoya: (Dammit! This is utter bullshit, but I'd have to be a fool to not jump on the opportunity)
He grits his teeth and fakes a smile towards the elderly woman.
Naoya: Alright you old bag, you got a deal.
The two shake hands in the quiet room...
