Maedbh's POV
“Hey babe, I don’t think I’m gonna make it tonight. The lads want to go out to the pub for a boy’s night. That alright?” he asks. Annoyance flickers over me as I glance at the clock. He was supposed to be here in 15 minutes and now he was bailing on me?
“Whatever” I say trying not to show my irritation. I didn’t have time to other plans now. It was too late, everyone would be doing something.
“Thanks babe, I’ll talk to you tomorrow” he replies, oblivious to my annoyance.
I snap my phone shut, staring at it as I wonder what to do. I flip it open again and go to the recent contacts, my finger hovering over the call button when I get to Harry’s number. He’d wanted to hang out tonight. Maybe he’d still be free. Or maybe if he had plans, he’d cancel them for me. Harry’s face appears in my mind and I snap my phone shut again when I imagine his gloating face. I sigh, tossing my phone on my bed. I wasn’t going to give him that satisfaction. Instead, I grab my book off my desk and open it to the first page. It was a new one but not very long. I would probably end up finishing it tonight if I wasn’t interrupted.
Late in the winter of my seventeenth year, my mother decided I was depressed…’
Three hours later, I couldn’t stop the tears streaming down my face. I could barely read the words because of how blurry everything was. I put a hand over my mouth to muffle the sobs since Caellum and my uncle had already gone to sleep. No not Augustus. He was supposed to be ok. My phone buzzes, and I blindly grab for it, flipping it open.
“Hey, I’m outside, let me in”
“It’s unlocked,” I croak. The phone is silent for a second and I wonder if he’s heard me, but then I hear the sound of the door opening and rushed footsteps up the stairs.
“I'm going to kill that ass. What did he do?” Harry growls, bursting through the door. I hastily wipe the tears away, shaking my head.
“Luke didn’t do anything,” I say with a wane smile, trying to calm him down.
“Then why are you...” he trails off confused until I see his face beginning to redden. “Is it… you know… because I can go run out and get you some chocolate and err tampons?” he squeaks, his face turning the color of a tomato, right to the tip of his ears. I can’t help but laugh as I shake my head again.
“No, it’s not that, well yes I am, but no. It’s the book,” I say holding up the almost finished book. He chuckles, the embarrassment dimming from his face.
“Only you’d cry over a book,” he says, crawling onto the bed next to me, close but not quite touching. “What is it?” he asks, taking it from my hands, careful not to lose my page.
“The Fault in Our Stars. Haley recommended it”
“Ahh ‘But it is the nature of stars to cross, and never was Shakespeare more wrong than when he has Cassius note, ‘The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars / But in ourselves.’”
“You’ve read it?” I ask, surprised to hear him quoting from the book. He nods his head.
“A couple months ago” he says as he hands it back to me. “Long bus rides, I have a lot of free time. Where are you at?” he asks.
“The last good day”
He nods his head. “Ah so you’re note even at the worst part” he says wrapping his arms and pulling me to his chest. I lean back, letting him be my pillow as I begin reading the book again. I’m not even a page in before I begin crying again. It was just to damn sad. Harry’s head settles on my shoulder as I try to keep the tears from spilling forth. As the pages turn and the tears overflow, Harry pulls me tighter against him and begins whispering to me to calm me down.
