Harry’s POV
I didn’t want to believe it. It couldn’t be real. Not again. She had to be lying. The second her words had processed I was out the door. This time I wasn’t taking any chances. I was going straight to the source. I peel down the familiar roads, automatically knowing the route. I’d driven it countless times before. The car is barely at a stop before I’m hopping out, marching towards the large doors. I rap quickly on the door; not particularly caring that it was already 10 and some people might be trying to sleep.
“Isn’t it a little la—“ a lady answers, annoyance coloring her voice. “Oh Harry” she exclaims, her voice changing from irritation to surprised delight. “It’s been so long! We’ve missed you. Go right on up. You still remember which room?” she asks, stepping aside. I give her a tight-lipped smile, nodding my head before taking the stairs two at a time.
“Is it true?” I ask, barging in to the room.
“Holy fuck” a surprised voice yells and I watch with sick amusement as he jumps a foot in the air, almost falling off his bed. “Harry?” he asks, getting over the surprise of my sudden entrance.
“Is it true?” I repeat, more concerned about getting the answer, than acknowledging the person I hadn’t spoken to in over two years.
“Is what true?” he asks, his face clouded with confusion.
“You and Maedbh”
Realization dawns on his face. “Harry, we didn’t cheat, I thought you knew that” he says, shaking his head immediately. I roll my eyes in annoyance.
“Not that. I know that didn’t happen.” I snap. “Are you and Maedbh dating?” I watch guilt settle over him and I got my answer before he could even open his mouth.
“It wasn’t something we’d planned,” he says hurriedly. “It just sort of happened.” Damn it, she hadn’t been lying. Anger rolls over me and the palms of my hands begin to hurt as my nails dig into them. How could this have happened? When I left, they’d hated each other. I knew they’d at least tried to be civil for my sake, but there’d always been that underlying tension. I was out the front door in two seconds.
“Harry wait” I hear Luke call after me, but I’m already in my car pulling away. There was one last thing I had to check.
“Did you know?” I ask when I get home. Gemma looks up from her book, raising an eyebrow at me, taking in my stiff stance.
“Know what?” she asks calmly, looking back at her book.
“About Maedbh and Luke”
“What are you talking about Harry?” she asks with a trace of annoyance, closing her book to look at me. She already knew I knew about the whole fake cheating thing. She was the one that had set me straight.
“Did you know Maedbh and Luke are dating?”
I watch her eyes widen in shock and she quickly shakes her head no.
“No Harry, I swear. I don’t live hear anymore, how could I have known? They’re dating?” she says immediately, shaking her head. I feel my muscles loosen as at least some of the tension slips away. She’d been the one I’d been talking to about Maedbh since I’d gotten home. But finding out about Luke and her had made me think Gemma had been hiding it from me. Pushing me to make a fool out of myself. To know she was innocent made me feel at least a little better.
“Yea, they are,” I say gruffly, slumping into the couch next to her.
“Oh Haz” she says sympathetically, but I shake my head. I didn’t want any pity.
