Liam paced around nervously, his own heart racing. Things were finally going steady with Brett, he didn't want to risk losing that. But he couldn't keep what Justin had said to him to himself, that would be more selfish.
He had sent Brett a text, telling the older boy to excuse himself from class to meet him in the bathroom. Finally Brett had arrived, "what's wrong?" he asked. Liam felt speechless, he thought he would be able to tell him and everything would be okay but here he was.
The opportunity to do so and he felt frozen, his mouth opened only to shut. "Li? What happened? Did I do something?" Liam felt his heart drop to his stomach, he had to tell him the truth.
"Justin spoke to me..." he paused when he saw the rage behind Brett's eyes at the other boy's name, should he tell him the truth? What if Brett did lash out and then the photo go leaked? Liam didn't personally care, but he knew Brett would.
"What the fuck did he want?"
Brett took an intimidating step forward and Liam backed up, "he showed me a photo..." he eyes averted down as he took in a deep breath, "I don't know how he got it or if he took it, but he has a photo of us... it's an obvious photo."
It took everything for Brett not to shift then and there, feeling his control slip he turned to the sink. His hands gripping it as he peeked at his reflection, his eyes glowing golden he closed them. "The sun... the moon... the truth."
Liam frowned, "what does that mean?"
Once Brett regained his control he turned to the younger, "it's a mantra, it helps keep me calm when I'm angry." He looked to the ground, "maybe we shouldn't do this right now Liam."
Liam froze, this was what he was afraid of. He didn't want to lose Brett, he couldn't. "Brett no," his voice soft, barely a whisper. "Please don't leave me, n-not over this and not because of him."
"I can't do this," Brett turned to the door only to pause, Liam held his breath hoping he would change his mind. "Last night was a mistake," instead he crushed Liam's heart.
Liam couldn't help the small gasp that escaped his mouth, his eyes watering as he turned to the sink. "Fine, fuck you," as soon as Brett left he felt his hands begin to shake. That overwhelming and overbearing anger began to bottle up inside him, his breathing becoming erratic as he turned to the mirror.
Unable to stop himself he threw his fist forward; he didn't care who saw him and he didn't care who heard him. His knuckle bloody as the glass shattered, he stared at the fall pieces, his reflection staring back at him.
The door opened, sending Liam stumbling backwards. His back against the wall he finally raised his gaze, letting out a sigh of relief when he saw Mason.
"What happened- wow," he cut his words short after noticing the state Liam's hand was in, "Li, what the fuck?" He grabbed his best friends hand and inspected the injury, "did you do this?"
Liam looked down, part of him felt embarrassed- mortified even. But he knew Mason never judged him, "yeah I did..." it didn't mean he was proud of what he had done, but he didn't have to lie about it.
"Shit, you need to see the nurse-"
"No," Liam was quick to interject, "look can we just not talk about it please? It's fine, it doesn't even hurt that much."
Mason gave him that look, a look he knew all to well. "It doesn't hurt because you're still pissed, it will hurt later and it could get infected. If you won't see the nurse at least tell your step dad."
Liam cringed at the thought, memories of his biological father flashing forward. "Can I just stay at yours tonight? I don't really want to go home," he didn't want to have to explain what he had done or why he had done it.
"Fine," Mason paused, "only if you tell me why you did it."
Liam sighed, "Justin saw me and Brett kiss... he took a fucking photo of it."
Mason's brows furrowed and his eyes hardened, "what the fuck? Why?"
"Cause he's a psychopath! He's trying to ruin what we had and it worked, I told Brett and he got scared it would ruin his reputation so he fucking dumped me- we weren't even really saying but still! We fucking slept together and now this shit?"
Liam leaned back against the wall, sliding down it as he brought his knees to his chest. Mason turned and locked the door behind them, hoping nobody would need to use the restroom and thankful that the chance was slim considering it was class time.
"I'm sorry Li," he sat beside his friend, "you slept with him?" That was something Mason hadn't expected, he knew Liam liked the guy but he didn't think it was that serious.
Liam felt stupid, he felt used and hurt. But more than anything he felt anger, rage. "Yep and look where that fucking got me," he scoffed. "We did it last night," his shoulders slumped as his head fell in his hands, "I honestly thought he actually liked me, that's pretty fucking stupid of me."
Mason's head leaned on his shoulder, "you're not stupid Li, you care about him and it's normal to be upset over this. I'd be pretty fucking hurt if it was me, so don't worry. We'll figure this out ok? You'll always have me."
Liam smiled, resting his head on top of Mason's. "I know," he looked at his hand, the blood drying around the knuckle that would surely bruise tomorrow. "You'll always have me too," Mason formed his hand into a fist and Liam went to meet it before pausing, "my knuckle."
"Oh shit right," they both laughed, sitting there for a while before someone knocked at the door. "I'll tell my parents and you can stay at ours tonight ok? We'll figure this out, don't give up yet."
Liam nodded, if only he knew how much worse things were going to get from here...
