"I can't believe you are going to the Bahamas and your not taking me! Christine, you suck!" Kaylee, my best friend, says to me while hugging me.
"Well you left me for Texas!" I say back.
"That's different," Kaylee says. "I didn't have a choice! Just go to a fancy sports prep school in Texas!" She says while hugging me tighter.
"You're squishing me!" I say with the last of my breath.
"I don't care!" She says, but she looses her grip a little. "I'm going to miss you so much!"
"I'm going to miss you and Kal so much too!" I whisper into her shoulder. She lets go and holds me at arms length.
"I'm coming to visit!" Kaylee said. "And you're not allowed to make any better best friends than me. Understand."
I laugh. "I don't think that's possible." Kaylee lets me go. "Tell Kal bye for me." She nods her head. "Bye, Kaylee."
"Bye Christine." Kaylee says one last time. Then I follow my parents onto the plane.

After my parents say their goodbyes I walk into my assigned dorm room where I will live with a roommate. I unpack my stuff and sit down for about two seconds before a girl walks in.
She looks at me, pauses, and then she looks away. She has short, strawberry blonde hair that rests about an inch below her shoulders. She also has grayish blue eyes."Um, hi!" I say trying to be nice.
"Uh, uh." The girl says looking around the room. "Hi...llo." She says quickly. She hesitates, then looks at me. "I didn't know whether to say hi or hello." She face palms.
"I'm Christine." I say trying to dispel the awkwardness. "What's your name?"
"Ava," she says quickly. She shakes her head awkwardly and she walks over to her bed.
"So which sport do you play?" I ask her.
"Diving and polo." Ava says without looking at me. She then turns around and starts unpacking her stuff.
"That's fun!" I say with as much enthusiasm as possible. "I cheer."
Ava nods her head. I realize she doesn't want to talk right now, so I stop talking. Maybe she just doesn't like talking? I really don't have any idea. After Ava is finished unpacking, I try to talk to her again. I am trying hard to be friends with this person, it just doesn't seem to be working!
"So," I start. "Where are you from?" Ava looks over at me and sits on her bed.
"Dover," Ava answers. She starts twisting her hair. "England." She looks up at the ceiling. I can tell she is trying to avoid eye contact.
"I'm from Hawaii." I say. Ava looks at me and then goes back to twisting her hair. I sit down on my bed.
We sit in awkward slience for a couple minutes."I love your hair." Ava randomly blurts out.
"Thank you." I laugh. I look down at my long mocha chocolate latte brown hair that matches my eyes. I smile and then the bell signaling dinner rings. "Are you hungry? Lets get something to eat."
"Ok." Ava says. She gets up and grabs her shoes and I grab mine. Then we walk out of the girl's dorms in slience. Once we get into the cafeteria hall, we stand in line together and share a table.
"This food is great!" I say while cutting an apple and putting it in my mouth.
"Yeah, it's nice." Ava says and looks back down at her food. She still won't make eye contact!. Er, I am trying so hard to be nice to her! Why does she keep cutting the conversation short? This is very annoying.
After I finish my apple I decide to try to make conversation again. "So... How do you lik..." I start but stop when someone catches my eye. I see a guy walking toward a table in the middle of the cafeteria. "I..." I try to speak again but I can't. Why does he have this effect on me? Once he gets closer to me, I see that he is good height, kinda tall. He looks about a year older than me. He has big beautiful blue eyes. His hair is short and it has a light brown color to it.
"Hello?" Ava asks waving her hand infront of my face. I realize that she must be wondering what is wrong because I probably look like an idiot staring at a random stranger. I ignore her and continue staring like an idiot at this boy. He walks right past our table and to one where a short boy, about the same age as me, with short red curls and faded blue eyes sits. He sets his tray down and walks over to the ginger. He grabs the ginger's face in both hands and kisses him. I almost throw up. He kisses him for about ten seconds before I force myself to look away and realize Ava is trying to get my attention. "Earth to Christine!" Ava says looking worried.
"Ew!" Is all I can say. "That is nasty!" Ava nods and looks away. I try to continue eating, but I have lost my appetite. I just sit there thinking about the boy and wait for Ava to finish eating.
After we eat, we go back to the dorm. School starts first thing in the morning at eight. So I decide that it's best that I go to sleep. I finally fall asleep thinking about the boy from the cafeteria.
