The morning sun slowly began to rise higher above the clouds, and its golden sunbeams brightened the gray and still gloomy streets of the city. Everything was just beginning to come to life, including the residents of Seoul, who slowly emerged from their beds, wanting to slow down the process as much as possible before leaving their homes for school or work for the whole day. Unfortunately, their situation was not improved by the fact that it was a universally hated Monday, the beginning of the week signifying that a whole day of hard work and early mornings lay ahead of them. On a Monday morning, there couldn't be anyone who would joyfully get up from under the warm blanket. And yet...
Somewhere in one of the apartments, there was a person who, with a smile on their face illuminated by the dazzling sunlight, got up very cheerfully. Ready to start the new day at full speed. That person was a certain 4-year-old boy named Bang Jisung, who was filled with energy at the mere thought that he managed to wake up before his dad would wake him up.
Which gave Jisung a perfect opportunity to scare his dad a little. So without wasting time, the boy slowly slipped out of bed and tiptoed to the exit of his room. Being in the hallway, the smell of fried pancakes filled the air, which, in addition to even greater joy for Jisung, also gave him information about where the person he was looking for was.
Continuing his journey on tiptoes, he went to the kitchen, where he delicately peeked around the walls, and upon seeing a figure standing with their back to him, a cunning smile appeared on the boy's face. Without wasting time, Jisung quickly leaped out from behind the wall, shouting throughout the apartment.
-Boo!!!
The loud scream he thought would surprise his dad didn't meet the reaction he expected. The man merely turned to the boy with one raised eyebrow, unsure of the purpose of the scream.
To make matters worse for Jisung, not only did he fail to scare anyone, but the person in front of him wasn't his dad either.
-Where's dad, Uncle?- he asked with a grimace, at which Changbin chuckled quietly to himself, finding it adorable.
-He got a call from work, little rascal- he replied, flipping the last pancake and approaching Jisung, picking him up for a moment before settling him on a chair and ruffling his nephew's hair in the process, which only made Jisung's cheeks puff up even more.
-I'm not a little rascal! Someday I'll be taller than Uncle and as tall as dad! You'll see!
The boy said proudly, and to add more credibility to his words, he stood up on the chair, showing how tall he would be one day. Seeing this, Changbin barely restrained his laughter because both Jisung's behavior and words were very amusing to him. After all, aside from the fact that his friend Chan wasn't the tallest person in the world, despite the boy's efforts, the chair didn't give him much height because he was still quite short. Although he was only four years old, he was still shorter than his peers, which of course Jisung wanted to hide from Changbin because both of them liked to tease each other about their heights.
He would have gladly argued with the kid now, but he let it go, not wanting to spoil his nephew's mood, who, although he didn't show it, must have been sad that Chan was at work.
-Come on, Sungie, eat up, we're leaving soon, and Chan will kill me if he finds out you didn't eat breakfast
-I'm eating!
Jisung, being a very hyperactive child, sat down abruptly, almost tipping over the chair. Luckily, Changbin managed to hold it before anything happened to his nephew. The man really wondered how he managed to take care of his son over the years, who, due to his haste and clumsiness, almost hurt himself at every step.
-And when will dad be back?
-Probably in the evening, Sungie
-So, he won't pick me up from kindergarten?
-No, sweetheart, but I'll come for you, okay?
Changbin didn't receive a response, just a slight nod from the boy who was evidently not pleased with his parent's late return.
-You know, we could go for cheesecake later, what do you think?
The man suggested, trying to appease his godson, who raised his head from his food at the mention of his favorite dessert and looked at his uncle with a sparkle in his eye that Changbin loved to see.
-Yes! Let's go, please!
-Okay, it's a deal. Now come on, we need to get you ready for school
Seeing an empty plate in front of Jisung, Changbin reached out his hand to the boy, who immediately grabbed it and this time, more calmly, got off the chair. Then, the two of them went to the four-year-old's room, where Changbin helped him get dressed and pack his backpack for school.
Ready, they went downstairs again, where the man dressed the boy warmly, as it was mid-November and the temperatures outside were getting closer to zero, if not below.
-Uncle, I can't breathe!
The little boy complained as his uncle tied his scarf too tightly around his neck.
Hearing this, Changbin loosened the scarf gently and looked at the boy questioningly, who, already wearing gloves, showed him a thumbs-up.
-Okay, let's go
He smiled at Jisung and, holding his hand, walked out with him. Walking towards the boy's kindergarten, which fortunately was close to the block where they lived, after a few minutes of constant chatter about all his toys, they reached their destination. There, Changbin handed the chatty child over to one of the caregivers.
-Here you go
Changbin handed the boy's things to Felix, relieved to finally feel the frost he could blame for the blush on his cheeks.
-I'll pick him up around three o'clock
He added, squatting down to the boy's level and adjusting his hat before leaving.
-Uncle, don't embarrass me in front of Lixi hyung
-Excuse me, I'm just making sure you don't freeze, you little rascal
Hearing the nickname, Felix laughed to himself, resulting in a grimace from Sung, but the preschooler quickly looked back at his uncle.
-But it's you and Hyung Lixie who are all red, not me!
The boy defended himself, noticing how both adults had turned red since they arrived at the kindergarten, which was strange to Jisung because it wasn't that cold, and they looked normal before.
-Next time we'll dress warmer, okay? And now look, Hyunjin is waiting for you
Changbin pointed to the window where one of the preschoolers was watching them, who was his nephew's best friend.
-Jinnie! Bye, Uncle!
The boy beamed before quickly kissing his uncle's cheek and then running to the entrance, disappearing behind them.
-Ah, these kids, huh?
Felix laughed when Changbin stood up.
-Yeah, I don't know how you manage a whole bunch of these little ones
-I have Jeongin to help me, so it's going somehow
Both smiled at each other, looking deep into each other's eyes. They became even redder.
-Um... I think I... have to go
The older one nervously scratched the back of his neck and pointed to the park exit, in the middle of which was the kindergarten.
-Ah... yeah... see you later
Felix reached out to shake his hyung's hand, but at the same time, the other planned to hug him, resulting in both of them being even more embarrassed. They exchanged, and now it was Changbin reaching out his hand while Felix was ready for a hug.
-Bye
Changbin bowed to avoid further embarrassment.
-Bye
