The next few days passed by in quiet understanding.
Sarah never left John Bs house, or his side for that matter. She helped him tie up some loose ends and made sure he had everything he needed for his temporary stay with a new family. Well, new people. They could never be his family.
Sarah and John B spent a lot of time with Kie. JJ. and Pope. Spending hours on the boat and doing what they used to but it didn't hit the same way it usually does. Everyone tried, but the mood couldn't be lifted.
In all honesty, John B was starting to get pissed. They were acting like he was getting the fucking death penalty. When in reality he was living with a different family. Big fucking deal.
Sarah noticed, of course she did. So when she made an excuse for them to leave their friends early on his penultimate day on the island he had never loved her more. And that is saying a lot.
"What's going on. You look like you're about to punch somebody."
"Have you seen the way they're acting? They're acting like I'm fucking dying! Like yes I'm upset I have to go live with a foster family too but its only for a few months then I'll be back like always. I'm not leaving you guys. I just wish they'd stop acting so sad and miserable. It's like when my dad died all over again. The looming sadness under the surface. Every kind gesture seems like forced sympathy not just something they wanted to do because that's how friends are supposed to be. I just really fucking hate it." he says, tears pricking the corners of his eyes, anger having turned into a sadness he didn't realize he had in him still.
Sarah pulls him into a hug and just holds him for a few minutes. He sobs into her shoulder and she never lets go or lets her grip falter. She's not going to let go until he wants to. It might've been ten minutes it might've been two. Either way his sobs stops and his breathing evens and he gently pulls away from her.
"Thank you. I love you."
"I love you too."
He grabs her hand and they walk back to the chateau in silence but it's a comfortable one. Listening to the sounds of their feet on the grass and the birds in the sky.
"Hey, what if we go on a nice date tomorrow just for fun?"
"I'd really enjoy that Sarah."
"Then it's settled."
"Want me to pick you up and everything?" He jokes lightly
"Only if you want to" She says with a sparkle in her eyes
"Maybe... we shall see"
"Dork"
"But you love me"
"You're right I do" She says and kisses him and that stupid smirk right of his face.
The kiss is sweet and slow, but with more emotion behind it than they both expected. His hands cup her cheeks almost immediately, her hands hold on to his forearms. Neither pulls back for a while, but when they both shed a tear or two, John B pulls back and swipes his thumbs underneath her eyes, then leaning his forehead against hers.
"I'm sorry I'm leaving you Sarah."
"You aren't leaving me, its a change of plans but you aren't far. Plus, unless this is all an elaborate ruse, you aren't going to prison. I'll still be able to talk to you."
He smiles gently saying "damn, you caught me. I'm actually a felon." he jokes with no real punch behind it, just a dumb gentle smirk on his face.
"I knew it." She almost whispers. "No pretty boy can be that perfect."
"Wait a minute!" he says with a dramatic gasp "THE Sarah Elizabeth Cameron thinks I'm a pretty boy?"
"Now you've caught me" She says smiling and leans in for another kiss.
This one is laced with more happiness than the last one.
"Let's go inside, I'm tired." he says
"Lead the way" and as always she follows him. They both know it without having to say anything, but she'd follow him anywhere. Through anything, no matter how hard it is, or how dangerous, wherever she goes she's there right by his side.
They change into comfier clothes and tangle into each others space, much like always but with a little more desperation than they usually do. They don't want to admit it but they both know this isn't going to last. Still they hold on to each other because it's all they have, the thought of this being forever is enough to suffice for their lack of it. 36 hours until their lives change. But right now, being tangled in each others warmth, much like they have for the last few nights, is all that matters.
"Hey Sar" he whispers after a while. More or less whispering over her head.
"Yes?"
"I'm gonna miss this. Out of everything that won't be normal and I'll miss like shit, this is at the top of the list."
"I'm gonna miss this too. I've gotten too used to this."
"Me too"
"I love you so much. I love you in ways there aren't words for. I hate to get all sad and sappy after my rant earlier but I mean it."
"Ditto."
"That's it?"
"No, I'm trying to lighten the mood."
"It's kind of working, but it would really work if you confessed your love for me." He looks at her with puppy dog eyes.
"Okay fine," she says in a very obvious fake mad tone "You mean the world to me, you always have and always will. I love you so much, I'd follow you into the depths of hell if I had to. You are the best thing that happened to me and no matter what happens I will always love you and support you. You have been the best boyfriend I could ask for. And I don't really care about getting sappy at this hour because if I wasn't too tired and too comfortable to get up and out of bed I would show you the stars and tell you some sappy stuff about gravity and how that's us." she confesses and he hangs onto her every word.
"In short, I love you. In long, whatever I just said. I'm going to miss you like shit but you're never going to be too far from me and that's all that really counts to me." She leans over and gently kisses him. He melts into her, letting every ounce of fear, sadness, anger fit into a kiss not fit to support the weight of it all, but somehow it does.
When they break apart and intertwine again there's a sadness akin to the blanket covering their torsos as they finally drift off, but they fight it off in favor of relishing in the warmth of each other. Foster care is tomorrows problem, right now all that matters is Sarah and John B, here together.
