Ringing of an alarm could be heard. The monotonous ringing only ended when a telephone operator named Amber picked up the call. Awakening from the noise.
"911 what is your emergency?"
"Please help I" a woman cries speaking incoherently.
"What seems to be the problem ma'am?"
"Someone bit my husband, and now he's passed out. He's...convulsing." She yelled
"Hold on ma'am I'll get the nearest ambulance at your location. You just hold onto the man's wound with a clean cloth. Can you do that?"
"O-okay..."
After calling the ambulance and directing the area, the operator hung up. Stressed and anxious from all the calls, Amber the operator puts her fingers to her face rubbing her eyes.
Knocking was made on the other side of the room. It was one of Ambers coworker. Carly "hey, it's time for you to clock out!"
"What time is it?" Looking at her watch, she only had a few minutes left.
Staring to Carly "Uh I still got a few more minutes."
Making a side eye to motion to Amber, "Well I don't think the director wants you overextending yourself anymore. Come on let the morning shift take over the calls."
Pausing for a brief moment she realizes she is famished. "Uh ok I guess I'll take the day off..."
Going to a diner she ordered herself a scrambled egg and some pancake. Sipping on her coffee she panders onto social media.
"Kid has difficulties breathing." She reads aloud. "That's a weird coincidence ..." To her it was oddly similar to past cases. Scrolling down she found nothing of interest.
"More coffee?" Asked the waitress.
Gesturing her cup to pour more. The lady does so.
Finishing her meal she leaves to home then falls asleep. For the past seven days all Amber did was go to work and pick up emergency calls. Recalling how many people have had difficulties breathing. Today was different however, it was the first time she heard about someone getting bit.
Falling asleep she let tiredness do the rest of the work as she drifts to sleep.
The next morning Ambers phone was ringing. She wanted to ignore it but the calls were being persistent. "Ugh..." groggy with a messy red hair. She looks at the call and picks up the phone.
"Hello...?" Still half asleep lying on her soft cushioned pillow.
"It's me Carly, the director told me to take the day off girl."
"Ok and?"
"What do you mean, we get to hang out today."
"Anyway I'm going to head to your house, let's go do something for a change. Maybe find a boyfriend for you? My boyfriend has a friend of his who's single." Teasing Amber
" No! I don't want to date one of Matt's stupid friends." Laughingly
"I don't know he's a looker, should try it out. Matt and I are already engaged, don't get left behind."
"Ugh, fine I'll go, tell Matt to bring his dumb friend." Sitting up.
"Great! I'll pick you at 3. Should give you enough time to ride and shine. And remember early bird gets the wor-"
Amber hangs up, and gets ready before Carly gets to her place. Once Carly had arrived both greeted each other.
"Hey girl! What's up!" Carly screamed.
Amber stepping down from her stair case. Getting into the vehicle amber said jokingly, "Oh shut up, let's go already haha."
Driving off they head to the mall.
"So Matt was able to reserve a dinner reservation at 7pm."
"What why so late? We're only going for one day." Amber confused.
"Well...I lied. I actually convinced the director to give us an entire week off."
"B-" before amber could fume Carly interrupted.
"Don't worry he said he got it covered and that you and I earned it. He said he'll see us in two weeks." Amber calmed a little
"Ugh fine." Reaching to the hotel that was pre planned the two dropped off their newly bought clothes inside their newly bought luggage.
Plunging to the bed Amber basks in the softness "Augh! This is much more comfier than my bed."
"You can say that again." Carly is seen doing the same thing.
"Go to your side of the bed." Pushing Carly off softly.
Before she could respond to Amber the door rang. "Oh that's them."
Following Carly as she makes her way to open the door.
"Good Evening ladies have you ordered some room service?"
Matt then presented a bouquet to Carly.
"Thanks love."
"Hi Amber, I've got someone whose been dying to meet you."
Stepping to the side he motions for the girls to look behind him.
"H-hey my names Joseph."
Looking past Carly he walked up to Amber, "and you must be Amber?" He brings his hands out to shake.
"Yep I'm Amber. Nice to meet you Joseph." She hesitantly gave a handshake.
Once they all rested they went to the prepared dinner reservation. Amber got to know that Matt's friend Joseph is a carpenter. He's made amazing beautiful structures. Carved wooden does and rabbits. Amber felt the hots for him, but work was always on her mind. Unable to pay attention, the dinner date was over in a flash.
Their stomachs filled they return to the hotel. However to Amber and Joseph's surprise, they were not aware that Matt and Carly planned for the two to be separated with their respective dates. Having their own rooms to themselves you can hear Carly and Matt from the room next to Amber and Joseph.
"So...uh, I guess it's time we head to sleep?" Amber cursed to Carly and Matt, because the beds were purposely set up to be close together. Able to join together by choice.
"I can sleep on the floor if you want." Joseph said awkwardly.
"No it's ok you don't have to. A small gap is ok with me."
Although the two had just first met for the first time. Amber had no issues with his looks. In fact she indeed has some sort of attraction towards him. Truthfully it is because Amber was not confident socially. She had relationships before but none successful.
Dozing off they fell asleep after silently browsing on their phone.
Waking up from a constant ring from her phone, Amber was awoken from the vibration. Checking her phone she saw that on her screen showed fifty missed calls from the Director.
Putting on her earbuds she began playing the messages.
"Amber...Carly...c'mon you two pick up!" The message ended. Playing the next "get away from me you sons of bitches..."
Pressing the next message again. "Carly, ugh pick up damn it...Amber or Carly if your getting this message you need to head back to the station."
He continues onto the next message, "you girls need to set the alarm for Marshall law to the mobile devices. Probably don't need to, but the television can only go so far." He hangs up again.
"I left the key around the gates, I would have gone in had I not needed to run aw-" the message ends again.
"As I was saying I needed to run away, for some unknown reason people have been biting people one after another." Amber looked at the video he recorded. It had showed the area they lived in went into chaos after leaving to town yesterday. Blood could be seen from the recording. The director had been recording while evading the crazed people running through the streets.
"W-what the hell?" Amber went back to the missed calls in a hurry.
"Girls I'm sorry I'd alarm the phones but..." before the current missed call ended you could hear that the directors vehicle crashed then tumbling down.
"I'm sorry but once you arm the code to Marshall law and call government to assist in this situation. You guys are dismissed."
Pumping what looks to be a shotgun he says one more line before ending the call, "It has been a pleasure working with you two...." The call ends after a shell went off in the background.
Amber is chilled and freaking out. Not too long had she left her home and now she's tasked with going back. What could be going on, she thought to herself. If only she knew what was happening.
