Peter helped Percy back to the tower as best as he could. He could feel how exhausted Percy was by how heavily he was leaning on him, but the two kept on going. On top of lugging a body around with him, Peter was dealing with his own piercing headache. It was the same feeling as when the dog attacked them at school, like his spider sense was trying to tell him something, but neither it nor Peter knew what.
Peter considered asking questions about... everything that just happened, but he didn't push it. It could wait until Percy was back at the tower.
Peter knew the rest of the team were following close behind them, but he didn't look back to them. For a second, Peter contemplated simply swinging back to Avengers' Tower with Percy in his arms. Then he realized that probably wouldn't end too well. Excessive attention was not something the pair needed at the moment.
They got quite a few strange looks from the street, what with Peter's Spider-Man costume, and a near-unconscious kid struggling along. A few snapped pictures of the duo, but Peter and Percy did their best to ignore them. Peter basically forgot the remainder of the Avengers were walking with them until he heard a loud, high-pitched fan girl scream.
"OH MY GOSH! ARE THOSE THE AVENGERS?!" someone yelled, destroying Peter's eardrums. That led to a mob of people swarming Peter's teammates, waving phones and articles of clothing prime for signing. Everyone simply ran past Peter in the chaos, making him a bit salty.
"No Spider-Man fans? None? Fine," he grumbled, as Percy laughed at his annoyance.
Peter laughed to himself too when he glanced back and saw Mr. Stark frowning at a fan who wanted a selfie. Captain America looked confused and disgruntled. Natasha looked like she was going to punch/murder the next person who went on a rant about how much they love her. Thor, however, was enjoying the attention. He lifted up his hammer a few times to pose, telling them to get his good side in all the photos.
Did Thor even have a bad side?
Somehow, Clint and Bruce had managed to slip away, leaving Black Widow, Cap, Thor, and Mr. Stark behind to suffer at the hands of the rabid fray. Peter suspected Thor and Mr. Stark could've just flown away, but for whatever reason, they stayed put.
Percy turned to Peter. "Thank the gods that isn't us. I would hate being famous. You?"
Thank the gods. The Norse deities were real, Peter supposed. But he had never heard anyone use the plural form of "Thank God". It kinda weirded him out. Just another mystery added to the growing list of Really weird stuff about my friend(?) Percy Jackson.
Peter thought it ironic that Percy wanted nothing to do with fame, as though he hadn't noticed the strange looks he had gotten all year because of the conspiracy theories surrounding his past.
"Yeah," Peter said. "Me too. But, um... have you not seen the people looking at you all weird in the hallway? There are, like, at least a dozen videos on YouTube about you."
Percy frowned, scrunching his eyebrows. "Really? Am I on BuzzFeed Unsolved?"
"Dunno, dude. It'd be cool, though."
"I kinda just thought that people were wary of the new kid with a tattoo and a gray streak in his hair."
"Maybe that, too," Peter said.
"Huh." Percy shrugged the shoulder that Peter wasn't holding onto, and continued to trudge forward.
After a few moments in silence, Percy muttered to himself, "My powers don't usually deplete me this much."
"What did you say?" Peter asked, confused.
"My powers... I don't usually get this tired unless I expend a lot of energy. Something strange is going on."
