~3/1/24When we're young, we're always taught about the monsters.
We read fairy tales and we fear the dark.
We make our parents check the closet, or under the bed.
Then, we grow older. We go through bullying, harassment, maybe worse.
We stop believing in the boogeyman, and trolls, and goblins.
Instead we start to fear people.
Judgment.
Criticism.
We fear the things people think about us, the things they might say.
We fear what they might do, just because we're not like them.
And, after a while, we get used to it.
We tune it out.
Some of us conform.
They forget what it was like before.
They turn a blind eye to the hatred of the world.
But others, we don't.
We don't conform.
We don't ignore the ugly that is society.
And, eventually, we all realize that the real monsters, they aren't from fairy tales, not from legends or stories.
They're real.
And they're worse than we thought.
