There are times where fear is a necessity to stay alive. To stay focused on surviving, and not to make any stupid decisions.
But there are also times where fear will eat you alive, making your dreams crumble in the palm of your hand."Miss L/N? Are you okay?" The teacher asked me.
I shot up out of my thoughts, turning my head to look at the teacher before slowly turning back to my class.
"I, I uhm-..." I was unable to find my words. I looked back down at the papers I was holding, the notes I had written down on the case I had to present.Jessica, Rebecca and Samantha all started snickering from the back of the class.
The teacher sighed, placing a hand on my shoulder, "It's okay, Y/N. Just go sit, we'll think of something else," she told me, giving me a reassuring smile.
I smiled at her, "Thank you, Miss Rose," I thanked her before going to my desk and sitting down in my seat.Stage fright.
It was something I had been suffering with my whole life. I couldn't speak in front of a large group of people, anxiety will fill my veins, rushing to my mind and heart, making both race for seemingly no reason at all.At the end of class the teacher called me over.
"Say, Y/N. Are you sure being a detective is what you want to be? I mean, you're doing great, you're getting good grades, think logically, but you do know that with the job comes presenting what you've figured out, right?" She told me, looking at me with worry.I sighed, "Yes, miss. I know presenting comes with it. But this is the dream that I've had ever since I was a little girl. Ever since-"
"Ever since Jeffrey went mad, I know," she finished my sentence, holding her hand up from keeping me from speaking, "That was 11 years ago, the case is closed for over 8 years now."
She leaned back, staying silent for a moment before speaking up again: "Y/N, you're a great girl, really, but please, for the love of God, tell me that case isn't all there is to your motivation on becoming a detective."I stayed quiet, giving her the answer she didn't want to hear.
Miss Rose sighed, waving me away, "You're dismissed. I'll send you your catch-up work through mail."
And with that, I left the classroom.
But the second I closed the door behind me, I heard Jessica call out to me: "Hey, nerd! What was that all about? Too scared to say a few words?" She asked in her annoying high-pitched voice as her friends Rebecca and Samantha laughed.I sighed, rolling my eyes, looking back at them, "Let me know when you come up with something creative to call me, you sack of poorly packaged horse shit," I told her, walking past her, turning around to see their shocked faces just before turning the corner, "Tell your boyfriend I said hi!"
I chuckled, turning back around to continue walking, but bumping into someone instead, causing the books to fall out of his arms.
"Oof. I'm so sorry!" I apologized, bending down to pick up his books.
"N-No, i-it's fine," he stuttered, rubbing his forehead.I stood back up and handed him his books back, but my eyebrows furrowed at the top book, "Biology? I didn't know you could study to become a doctor here," I joked, chuckling before looking up at him.
He had messy dark brown hair and amber eyes, he wore glasses and towered slightly over me, being at least a head taller than me.
He chuckled as well, "No, I'm studying to become a cop. But that means I'll need to know the anatomy of at least homosapiens as well."
I nodded along, my tired brain trying to process what he said.
He sighed, "I need to know what's inside a person."
"OH!" I exclaimed, laughing at my own stupidity, "Makes sense," I said back, scratching the back of my head as my face turned red.
He smiled at my reaction, "The name's Sol, by the way. Sol Richardson," he introduced himself, "You're Y/N L/N, right?"
I nodded, furrowing my eyebrows in surprise, "Yeah, how'd you know?"
He shrugged, "People talk a lot about you, saying how strange you are for trying to re-solve already closed cases. I've seen some of your work, and I'm impressed. The way you look at things so differently compared to the other students is really intriguing," he explained, fidgeting with his fingers as he became a bit nervous and shy talking like that.
My frown turned into a smile, "That's really sweet, thank you," I told him. "I'm sure you're gonna be a great cop someday, Sol."
He smiled, "Thank you, Y/N. See you around?"
"See you around."And with that we parted ways. It was rare to meet nice people, especially here where everything is seen as a competition.
If only there were more people like that.-= A/N =-
