a/n: please imagine that instead of just three rookies joining in the pilot (nolan, west and chen) that there is one more of them cause then the story will make sense; his name will be lewis thompson

"you're really gonna do me like that?" lopez asked.
"hey! the detective position's not yours yet" bishop replied, stating the obvious. "and youngest t.o to youngest detective would really pair nicely. and if you can't stand competition..." she began. i looked over to lopez to find that all too familiar glimmer of anger mixed with determination in her eyes, realising she had more to prove. "please.. i grew up with four brothers and two bedrooms, i'll be at the finish line before you know the competition has even started!" she declared. i laughed at the two girls bickering deciding who's better.

ever since joining the l.a.p.d i've felt this overwhelming sense that i need to prove myself.
but it's women like bishop and lopez who lead me to the realisation that i am good enough for who i am already. yes, a little boost to my status in the field would be nice, but ive already gotten so far in my career.

"where do you think you're going boot?" angela yelled at a man who looked like a deer in headlights. his hair was rather scruffy, but his face clean shaven. although he was about 6'2 and slightly muscular, his face was coated in fear along with brown eyes that were pleading for approval. "ermmmm, locker room then roll call?" he replied; it was as if he was asking for approval on his actions, instead of telling us what they were. bishop looked to me, then lopez then back to the man and told him "oh no. you need to present yourself to the captain first, it's tradition ya know".
"first door on the left. up the stairs" lopez ordered, chiming in. "oh, uh thank-" the mysterious man began. "wait, stop torturing the poor guy it's his first day" i told my colleges behind me. they chuckled in satisfaction as they went into the briefing room, preparing themselves for whatever the day had ahead. "don't let anyone get in your head here, that's the last thing the people of LA want trust me" i told him. his overall expression seemed to relax as i explained to him what its like here. "if you ever need anyone to talk to, i'm y/l/n - but call me y/n" i said with a smile on my face. he smiled back at me and replied with a simple "will do" and headed for the captains office.

i walked into the briefing room to see bishop sat next to lopez nearer the back of the room with two free spaces next to them. i quickly sat down next to lopez and began thinking about the new rookies when she gently elbowed my arm, signalling for me to focus. i looked over at her with a confused look on my face to be greeted with a smirk as she knew what would happen next. "this seat taken?" a familiar voice asked. i turned my head to be greeted with none other than tim bradford with a small smile dancing on his lips. "nope... and im guessing your smile is because its rookie day?" i asked him. his smile only grew wider as he whispered his response. "it's like christmas and the purdge all in one!"
i began to chuckle whilst slowly shaking my head at his harshness. "yeah, yeah, yeah.. every year you spend time analysing all the different ways on how to traumatise the future generations of the lapd!" he laughs at my protectiveness but allows me to proceed. "just for once, please steer-clear from taunting this batch of rookies this year. i've met one of them, they seem... nice!" i look at him with a small glimmer of hope in my eyes which is soon crushed by his next sentence. "oh come on y/n you and i both know some of these guys can be complete assholes! once they leave the academy and go into the field they immediately sink to the bottom of the evolutionary chain and some of the still have the audacity to think they're the shit! besides, i met west's son today" he tells me. after acknowledging what he said, my curiosity gets the best of me compelling me to ask "what's he like?" tim looks at me with a changed expression and replies with "bold". from this one word alone i can tell he called tim's bluff, embarrassing him infront of others. "so, he impressed you?" i ask him. he rolls his eyes in response which confirms my suspicions causing me to let out a giggle. "you should've seen it y/n! i start by telling him..." he starts explaining the small interaction that will forever create a negative impact but his voice becomes muffled out as i notice who walks through the door.

the rookie i previously spoke to earlier quickly scurried to the front of the room, placing himself with his coworkers. i inferred that he knew the girl and boy next to him, as they looked to be having comfortable chit-chat with each other. there is one more rookies behind them, but he looked more fearful rather than confident. i hate to admit but i don't see him lasting long in the lapd in comparison to the three at the front. i slowly come back to reality when i hear tim repeatedly calling out my name.

"y/n, y/nnnn did you hear what he said to me?!" tim asked. i turned to face him as he looked eager to hear my response. "oh what... yeah! he called your bluff by not being scared away by your personality" my gaze quickly turned back to the new rookies, specifically the older looking one. tim noticed my actions and copied my actions. "awww, already have a favourite?" he said - mocking me. my smile quickly dropped into a frown as he began to analyse the unknown man. "that's a new rookie! he looks 40!" tim states.  "oh... so not far behind you?" i reply, accompanied with a smirk. he gently pushes my arm gaining attention from lopez. "we ran into him earlier, you can smell the fear on him from a mile away" she informed him. the pair began to laugh at my annoyance to their comments leaving me to defend the rookie. "guys stop. just give him a chance okay? he seems like a really nice guy" before the two could make a snarky reply we were interrupted by sergeant grey giving us todays orders.

"alright, alright" grey begins. "settle down, settle down". i look over at tim who has an evil look in his eye, preparing his usual 'tim test' to his new rookie - i can only hope they pass. "so, ok we got some new blood this morning. and some, pushing the expiration date" grey informs us. the briefing room erupts into a quiet laugher whilst i stay silent and hope the sergeant gets on with it. "get up" grey orders directly to the three at the front. i assume it's because they look the most confident - with the one behind them sinking further into his seat wanting to go unnoticed. he begins lecturing them about their right to be here whilst i look to lopez hoping she would be like me and stay sympathetic towards them. my dreams were soon crushed when i saw her slowly talk to bishop about her expectations for the next rookies.

"it's time to play the training officer match game" grey informs us. a few cheers can be heard in the room making the rookies more nervous, and my colleges more powerful. "our contestants are lucy chen, a hot shot who made her first arrest before clocking into work" just from her first actions alone i'm already impressed with her, hoping she will do well in the lapd. "legacy jackson west, who broke all his dad's records at the academy" i look back to tim to see his jaw slightly clenched, remembering their interaction from earlier. "look-out lewis thompson, going almost unnoticed at the academy 'till he pointed out a flaw on the program earning a high spot on the lapd's radar." a few "ooo's" can be heard as the poor rookie lowers his head wanting to go unseen. "and john nolan, who was born before disco died" i can already sense he will become a laughing stock in this profession, but something about him tells me he won't give up. "and the winners are... officer bishop you have the joy of the look-out" i turn to her to see her face fall as she greets the same realisation i have. "officer bradford you get our hotshot" chen turns and looks at us with a hopeful smile, juxtaposed with tim's stern expression making her turn away in fear. " officer lopez, you get our legacy" lopez looks smug at her reward believing she's 'won'. "which leaves officer y/l/n to ride with the 40-year-old rookie" the whole room suddenly becomes silent, whilst everyone slowly turns to face me. my skin begins to break out in goosebumps knowing that my role as a trining officer is being questioned by all corners of the room, including my close friends lopez and bradford.
