With that, she left

With that, she left. Again. Out of my reach, just like she did five years ago.

Sighing I went to the dining hall and sat at the head of the table, waiting for them to come.

It hadn't been two minutes when I heard footsteps. Liam, Irene, and Ace – all three were coming toward the table.

Ace looked at me and frowned, choosing to sit at the other end of the table. Liam greeted me, saying, "Good evening, Grandfather," and went to sit toward Ace's left.

Irene sat to his right, and we served ourselves.

As I observed Ace and Irene during dinner, a mixture of emotions stirred within me. Ace, my son, seated at a distance, displayed a palpable disapproval that echoed the chasm that had widened between us over the years. His frown mirrored the estrangement that seemed insurmountable. I had betrayed him, my son, my own blood. And he hated me for it.

On the other side of the table, Irene, my ex-wife, sat, her eyes revealing a complex tapestry of emotions. Despite the passage of time, there was still a flicker of something unresolved. It was as if the wounds from our past were laid bare, making every interaction dull and painful.

Seeing Liam's melancholic eyes, reminded me of the unfortunate loss.

Oh how much I wished to go back to that night, stop him from going all alone. Maybe I could've saved them. It was all my fault! Now, I am repaying for my sins... my family isn't even mine anymore...

But I had to be strong. Maintain my stoicism, even if that pang of regret lingered deep within for I couldn't let anyone see me like this. I landed myself in this position and it must be me alone who would conquer this. I have to, if not for myself then for those I still care about, even if they don't...

I had to get a hold of my emotions...Ace would hate me even more but this has to be done. I can't let him drown in this miserable world all alone. I know he needs a miracle, a boon to save him and I think this might be it.

The dinner went by in a profound silence.

After dinner, Liam excused himself, and Irene eyed me to begin.
