yours"Jacob! Lauren! Wake up!" I yell down the hall for the third time. Billy is already up and gone to one of the cousin's houses so I'm left with the teens. "Okay! I'm up," Lauren walks out of her room in short shorts and an oversized T-shirt that probably is Jacob's. "Go get your cousin up," I order as I turn the coffee machine on. Once she comes back she's going to want a cup or three. "Ahhh!" I turn alarmed at the screaming. "What? What's wrong?" I slide down the hall in my socks faster than humanly possible to the opened door at the end. Jacob's sat up in bed very awake and definitely wet. I cross my arms at the two teens. "When I said wake your cousin up I didn't mean also bath him."
"I will put bugs in your bed!" Jacob screams while trying to get untangled from his sheets. Lauren stands holding a now empty mug and laughs at her younger cousin as he struggles and ends up falling off the bed. "School starts today, I want you up and ready in ten minutes to come eat breakfast," I command before leaving the room and sliding back into the kitchen. I grab the cereal from the top shelf with ease before getting the milk out of the fridge. Today's breakfast is easy and no work for me, not that it matters since my days are free and filled with empty wasted time.
"Kati, have you seen my earrings?" Lauren yells from down the hall a few minutes later. "You have like 100! You need to be more specific!" I call back while pouring the coffee into the cup and smelling it. The smell no longer is appealing to me. All I smell is the burnt beans and feel no interest in the drink my whole family can't live without. "The new small ones with the abalone that Auntie Deb made me!"
I know exactly what she's talking about mostly because I borrowed them and am wearing them. "Uhh- yeah, I think so!" I call back as I quickly unclamp them and pull them out of my ears. "I think I saw them on the living room table!" I call again as I start to walk down the hall casually like I didn't just steal them. "Yeah, here," I say while knocking on the bathroom door. She cracks it open and her tan arm peaks out to grab them. "Don't lose them again- Auntie Deb took a while on them I heard," I order Lauren who doesn't say anything but I know she heard. Auntie Deb isn't our actual aunt, I'm not really sure how she's related to Billy and I let alone the cousins, but everyone calls her Auntie Deb or Debbi.
Jacob then exits his room now wearing jeans and the shirt he was wearing yesterday. "Hey, Jake? You do realize you have a drawer filled with T-shirts? I know Lauren steals them a lot but you can just steal them back," he rolls his eyes at my teasing and continues down the hall and sits at our small round table. It has four chairs which is perfect since there are only four of us.
When my sister Sarah died I started taking care of Lauren with the help from Billy since we were the closest to her. Then when Jacob's mom died I moved in and started taking care of him too. Even though they're technically my niece and nephew I love them like my own children. As they got older and closer to my age it's been harder to boss them around since they see me now as equal and not someone in charge.
"Where's my dad?" Jacob asks while looking around the living room and finding it empty. "No clue he left early saying her had to go to his cousins, don't know which one but probably Uncle Smokes." Lauren comes out of the bathroom and joins us at the table. "Uhhh, I do not want to go back to school," she slumps into the chair and starts to drink the coffee I made for her. "I do! Finally in high school!" Jacob cheers which causes Lauren to groan again. "Oh yeahhhh, I'm with dweeby mcgeee," I swallow a laugh but Jacob catches it. I shake my head at him letting him know he's not a dweeb.
