"No, not at all. I was just making sure you were okay. Hell of a first call" he shakes his head. "Well, it's not technically my first call but yeah, it was pretty sketchy for a second there" I agree. "That's not exactly what I meant" he says slowly and I furrow my brows. "What did you mean?" I frown. "When you get transferred to another station, the new Captain gets told what made you transfer and about your last call" Bobby explained and my breath catches in my throat.
"So, what I mean is, it's a hell of a call to come back to" he finishes and I look away. "I'm good, Cap" I can't meet his eye. "Your previous Captain refused to tell me the details but I do know that it was a car accident that affected you a lot" Bobby sighs and I take a deep breath.
"I said I'm good" I look up at him and he leans forward. "I'm not saying you aren't. I'm saying that if you need someone to talk to, about anything, I and the entire 118 will always be there to listen" his voice is so soft and calming that it almost brings tears to my eyes.
"Thank you. I don't really want to talk about it. Not right now, at least" I nod and he smiles softly before standing up and walking towards his door to open it. "Uh, Bobby?" I clear my throat and he turns around to look at me. "I know it's only my first day and this might be a lot to ask but...I'm just going to tell you because it's pretty important" I sigh and he comes back and sits down.
"Are you alright?" he asks, genuine concern and something else I can't quite place in his eyes. "I don't do well around alcohol. Especially drunk drivers. So, if there's ever a call to a bar or something...I might struggle a bit. I'll still get the job done and I'm not asking you to keep me away from it because that's just not logical, I'm just warning you" I explain and he nods.
"That's absolutely fine. Thank you for telling me. Just to let you know, the guys usually go out for drinks once a week after shift but you are by no means required to go. Even when I do go, which isn't every time, I don't drink" Bobby says and I sigh. "Thanks for letting me know" I nod and he smiles, causing a heat to pool in my cheeks and I look down.
"What time do you guys usually have dinner around here?" I question after a moment. "Whenever we get the chance" Bobby jokes and I laugh softly. "I used to cook for the station in JV but I get the feeling the kitchen is your domain and since I'm the newbie, I will not step on your toes or anything" I smile. "You are welcome to cook or make food there any time you like. It's not my kitchen" he smiles back.
"Well, in that case, would you mind if I made dinner this evening? Or I can help you, I don't mind. Cooking helps me settle down in a place" I ask and he nods. "You can cook this evening and I would love to help you" Bobby decides and I grin. "Well, I make a killer chicken salad so I just need the chicken and some seasoning" I shrug. "What type of chicken? Breast, leg, wing?" Bobby asks, the two of us standing up.
"I use breast for it. I can run to the store and get it quickly" I smile. "No, no, we'll just make Buck go" Bobby grins mischievously and I laugh. "Alright" I nod, the two of us walking out the office while laughing. We head up the stairs together and I don't miss the smirk on Hen and Chim's faces as they watch us.
"Buck, can you run to the store and get some chicken breast please? Enough to feed the six of us" Bobby requests and Buck nods. "I think you mean the seven of us" a female voice says as a woman in a cop uniform walks up the stairs. "Athena!" Hen greets, hugging the woman. "Alright, make it seven" Bobby corrects and Buck rolls his eyes with a smile before heading out.
"Athena, this is our newest member of the family. Cassandra, this is Athena Grant, my best friend" Hen introduces. "Hi, nice to meet you" I shake Athena's hand. "What am I, chopped liver?" Chim throws his hands up behind Hen and she rolls her eyes. "I saw you at the scene a couple of hours ago. Nice work on that car" Athena compliments and I smile. "Thank you" I nod.
"Bobby, how you been?" Athena smiles as Bobby comes up to her and gives her a side-hug. "Same old, same old" he shrugs and Athena laughs. "What are you making tonight? You don't usually go for chicken" Athena steps back, looking at him. "I'm not making anything" he shakes his head, looking at me.
"Holy shit, you're letting someone else cook dinner?" Chim looks at Bobby with wide eyes. "Eh, I wasn't really in the mood to cook anyway and Cassandra asked if she could cook" he shrugs and everyone just looks at him in shock. "Does he not do that a lot?" I ask Hen and she just shakes her head.
"If you want to cook then that's fine, I don't mind" I look at Bobby. "No, no. You said you make a killer chicken salad and now I want to try it" Bobby smiles at me and I smile back. "Well, now I'm intrigued. I've never had a good homemade chicken salad before, don't tell my wife I said that" Hen puts her hands on her hips before looking at Chimney. "Oh, I'm definitely telling her that" Chim teases.
"Howard Han, you wouldn't dare" Hen points a finger in his direction and he laughs before holding his hands up. "No, I wouldn't. But he might" Chim points to Eddie who has his phone in his hand with a smirk on his face. "Eddie! No!" Hen charges at him and he laughs, running away from the woman, causing all of us to laugh at him.
"While that is hilarious to watch, I gotta backtrack a second. Your name is Howard?" I laugh before looking at Chim. "Well, you didn't think my name was actually Chimney, did you?" he jokes. "Dude, I lived in Florida. We're notorious for our awful names. I literally once knew someone called Fridge. That is the name on his birth certificate" I scoff and Athena laughs. "Now that is just a crime" she says dramatically and I giggle.
"Wait, wait, it gets better. Guess what his brother was called" I laugh. "Go on?" Bobby grins at me. "Gator. Deadass, the dude's name was Gator" after I say that, everyone bursts out in laughter, including Hen and Eddie, who had tuned into the conversation.
"I'm so happy my family have normal names" I shake my head. "What names you got in your family then?" Athena asks. "Well, you have my parents, June and Peter, then my older brother Jack, my older sister Poppy, my niece Sadie, my nephew Levi and my daughter Daniella" I list off. "You didn't mention a brother or niece earlier" Chim points out. "Right, Bobby you wanna help get the salad prepped?" I change the subject abruptly and I get frowns from everyone before I walk into the kitchen.
I grab the necessary things and start washing the vegetables when Bobby comes over to me, starting to cut some of the vegetables for me. "Thanks" I say softly, not looking away from the sink. "Hey, I got the chicken!" Buck comes jogging up the stairs and he hands me the chicken, which I start chopping up and seasoning before putting it in the over.
"Okay the chicken will be done in an hour so until then-" I get cut off by the bell ringing. "Oh great. Hold on, I'll take it out" I grab a towel. "No, leave it. I'm staying here so I'll keep an eye on it for you" Athena stops me and I smile. "Thank you so much" I thank her before rushing downstairs and hopping in the engine.
A/N:
I expect this to be a slow burn-ish. It won't happen in the next five chapters but it shouldn't take ages for it either, maybe in about 10-15 chapters?
