The weekend had gone by crazily fast while the week went by tormentingly slow. The days felt to be getting longer and longer. Ally knew it wasn't actually since time didn't work like that but still she couldn't help but think that time was slowing down. It was just the anticipation and nervousness she felt for Friday. The draft day. She had been wondering for days how the American people possibly let this happen. She knew that society had really no other choice but still. There's no way they would agree to send children to war, even if they needed more soldiers. That was until she did some digging and realized nothing about this had been mentioned at all. Almost as if it never was going to happen in the first place. There was no exact answer but Ally had assumed that the government was probably paying families and schools to not speak a word about this. Which honestly wasn't that surprising that it was working since people are pretty greedy nowadays especially with the shortages of money and supplies going on due to the war. After all, they wanted to survive too.
It had finally reached Friday. Probably the most depressing day Ally had seen ever since the war started. Hardly anyone spoke at all. Even though most teachers gave us free periods, Ally had assumed they must have felt some sort of sympathy for us. I guess they were trying to make someone's last day at school not feel as torturous. Even the freshman had free periods. Even though they would not be drafted they still had to see their upperclassmen leave for war. Though there was a way that a freshman could get drafted. If they volunteered to go instead of someone else. Which of course no one was going to do. I mean who's really that stupid?
It was now finally 9th period. Ally was in her history class like usual with her headphones in blaring music into her ears. Her history teacher let them have a free period like all her other teachers did. There was now 5 minutes until classes were out when Ally decided to take out her headphones. She put them away and started texting her mom when she was cut off by the speaker coming on. Everyone's attention was immediately up at the speakers, including Ally's.
"Hello everyone this is your principal talking. As you are all aware today is the day for the draft. If you were interested in volunteering to be drafted you had to come by the office earlier today." He paused for a moment.
"No one ended up volunteering. Now let us commence with the draft. I have here the names that had been randomly picked to be drafted." He took a deep breath that could clearly be heard through the speaker.
Ally looked back down as she rubbed her hands together. She was curious on who was going to be drafted but she wasn't too focused on it.
"These following people are the chosen ones to be drafted. If you are called please stop by the office after school to get your draft form." He took another deep breath.
"The chosen people are ____ ___, ____ ____, ____ _____, ____ ____, _____ _____, ____ ____, __ ____, _____ _____, ______ ______, _____ ___."
Ally froze. Her head started to go fuzzy from the anxiety. Half of the people just named were Ally's friends from other grades. She couldn't believe it. What were the odds? No way. No way! I can't just...sit here. No. No! I refuse to! Ally jumped up from her seat where the adrenaline went to her head causing her to get light headed. She wished it away and darted out of the classroom. She was running down the hallway as fast as she could. Running like her life meant nothing to her. Like death was just around the corner.
Matt, Gary, and John all had 9th period together. It was their science class. Also just a few classes down from Ally's 9th period. Which worked out for them all since they would meet up with each other and go to their lockers together.
"I can't believe that really just happened." Matt said in disbelief.
"Yeah, I mean I knew they were going to be drafting 10 students but the fact that it actually just happened is-" Gary was cut off before he could finish his statement.
