It was now September, approximately a month after school had started. The past month had been all the same. The occasional gossip, politics, bullying, homework, etc. Though there was one thing that had changed. The tension that had been building up more and more everyday between every child at school. Of course there could be a number of reasons why, but Ally had assumed it was because of the US and Russia disagreements lately.
The US and Russia were never buddy-buddy countries, but they always tried to keep peace with each other. Lately though the leaders of both the countries keep coming to disagreements with each other. And we're not talking about just simple disagreements; we're talking about full on yelling arguments to prove the other wrong. There had been multiple different threats of war against the other. Therefore, it's definitely making the US citizens on the edge of their seats. One more argument taken too far could be the reason WW3 was to break out and no one wanted that.Ally decided to stop thinking about this so much. She needed to live her life in the present and not think so much about the future. The future is unpredictable after all. Though with her overthinking so much she ended up not being able to go back to sleep so she decided to get up a little early. She got up and got ready for school then headed downstairs.
She thought she was just 20 minutes early, but she actually woke up a whole hour early. "Well that's great." Ally mumbled to herself. She sat down on the couch and grabbed the tv remote. She turned on the on button and changed the channel to the news. A report of a school shooting from yesterday was presented on the screen. "Dang, another one? Will those ever end?" Ally said mercifully. Just as Ally was reading the caption at the bottom of the screen the screen immediately changed with a breaking news label on it.BREAKING NEWS! EVIDENCE HAS BEEN FOUND CONFIRMING RUSSIA HAS BEEN INFILTRATING OUR SUPPLY ROUTES FOR MONTHS! THE GOVERNMENT HAS TAKEN THIS AS A DECLARATION OF WAR. WW3 HAS BEGUN!
Ally's throat had tightened up. She felt like she was suffocating. Unable to breathe, call for help, or do anything at all. She felt completely useless. She reread the message probably about 10 more times before she finally understood. We were now at war. A world war. That was going to be fought in her country. She couldn't believe it. She didn't believe it. Were we really at war? A real life war? Ally slumped into the couch and buried her face in her hands. She knew that inflation had been increasing the past couple of months but she didn't know why. Guess that answered her question for her. Someone had been taking supplies out of their supply routes for months and that someone was Russia. The government probably already knew this information for months but didn't want to reveal it to the public yet. So why now? Why are they now deciding to take the next step? What was to happen? What were they trying to achieve out of this? Ally had those questions on her mind for hours.
When Ally went to school that day it was eerily quiet. Not surprising though, after all everyone had just found out we were now in a war. It was ironic to Ally when you compared this to the movies. In movies when the citizens find out they're in a war they all go crazy screaming their heads off and talking about it for months. Yet in real life it was the complete opposite. Some may have wanted to break down and cry, but the reality was everyone was too scared to even speak about it. I guess it really is different when it's actually happening to you. Especially when you're still a minor. It really hits you hard. You've spent your whole life living carefree and having nothing to worry about. The only thing you constantly think about for the future is what it will be like. What will your future profession be? Will you be married, have kids? Will you still have the same friends? Then one day you wake up and that future is taken away from you, in a blink of an eye. All you are thinking about for the future now is if you'll still be alive. The reality of that is dreadful.
"Ally! Ally! Hellooo!" Ally snapped out of it and looked up to see Matt staring down at her. She obviously got lost in her thoughts. "Geez, I don't know what you're thinking about, but I can already tell you're overthinking it." Ally gave him an annoyed look. "Well whatever, nevermind that. I have a question for you." This caught Ally's attention as she looked at him fully listening to what he had to say. "Is it true? You know...the whole WW3 thing?" Matt looked down while he was saying it. Ally sighed. "Yes, it is true." Ally had to take a pause in between her words to finish them. Matt kept his head still staring at the floor beneath him. Ally sighed again. She put her hand on his shoulder. He was shocked and immediately raised his head back up. There was a long pause of them just looking at each other and then suddenly she felt a warm presence towering over her. His arms were hugged tightly around her clenching the fabric on her back. He put his head down on her shoulder. "Ally, thank you so much, for always being there for me." He was mumbling into her shoulder. She could barely understand what he had said since it was so quiet. Ally hugged him back. "I will always. You hear me? Always. Be by your side no matter what happens. We're in this together." Ally said with confidence as she leaned into the embrace more.
