JESSICA

"Hello?" Dr Henry's voice is coming from downstairs, where I left Vecker.

We ended up going to a bar for happy hour because the more we talked, the more we realized we were actual lonely spinsters.

I know we are being dramatic because we just scratched twenty, our tits are still perky and we are drop dead gorgeous—as the bartender was kind enough to point out but none of it means anything.

For me, I am too consumed with guilt of my past to allow myself any true happiness and Vecker, is too strong to admit she is indeed very distraught over losing Liam.

Hence the sobering up with Dr Henry's expensive coffee so she can go for rehearsal but it's not even 5PM yet, he is not supposed to be home.

"Hi, you must be Dr Henry." Vecker sounds unfazed as that Russian cogency never crumbles. "I hope you don't mind but I came to check on Jessica."

"I do not," it is a simple answer that I hope he means.

We never really discussed having people over as my visitors but I doubt I am allowed to, this is still a job.

"I'm Odessa Vecker by the way, one of Jessica's girlfriends."

She is my only girlfriend actually.

"As you already know I'm Dr Aleksander Henry." I peak and their hands are shaking. "Nice to meet you."

"Likewise."

I hope she means it too because Vecker is a great judge of character. It only takes her 3seconds to decipher someone based on their personality and first impression. Unlike me, who is sometimes vain and very shallow.

"Where is Jessica?" He walks to the kitchen with his flask and my heart drops.

I know I should go down but the coffee did nothing for my buzz. I'm still a bit tipsy and I don't want to risk making more of a fool for myself in front of him, that would be 4times in a row too much.

"Upstairs. She is changing her dressing and applying ointment to her burn." She waits for him to face her to say, "she should be down soon."

"Okay." Dr Henry sounds tense.

"So, you paid for her tuition and got her a house call?" I gasp as Vecker adds, "either the benefits of this job are great or you're the nicest boss ever."

There is a short pause.

"I have rehearsal at six and something tells me we won't meet again for a long time," Vecker explains when he raises a brow and I hit my forehead.

That damn, Russian intensity.

"Are you Romanian? I can't help but detect an accent and the way you say certain words."

Dr Henry has disappeared to a corner of the kitchen that I can't see but Odessa is in my view because she is in the dining table and can see me clearly.

"Boss," I mouth the reminder

"I am Russian," she smiles at me from the lower floor. "Back to Jessica, anything I should know?"

"You mean apart from the fact that MIT was her back up school?" Odessa laughs a little. "She can't be serious, can she?" He sounds genuinely curious.

"I am afraid she is," Vecker gives me a glance before adding. "Did she tell you about Stanford? How she literally has no idea—"

"How hard it is to get in? I am aware of that too."

I hate how I can't see his face because he sounds like he is smiling, which means his dimples might be showing again.
