Sonic's POV

"I finished analysing the data," Tails smiled, spinning around on his chair to look at me. He'd set up some kind of mini chemistry set behind him, in which the black powder was clearly the centre of attention. "It's obviously very clear from DNA sampling that it's from Mephiles. But what was interesting is that is seems to be tissue from the inside of his brain. Although it is of course black and dusty, unlike our brain tissues, that can be chalked down to the fact that Mephiles is only a shadow."

"So what? Where does this lead us?" I asked, not really caring about the science behind it or what on earth a brain tissue was, but rather only caring about how it would all help Shadow.

"Not much, I'm afraid." Tails' smile became sympathetic, "but it does tell us two things. This brain tissue couldn't have just been left her randomly, Sonic. I've only seen this once before, when Shadow let me check out some of his abilities. He's able to enter his own mind, isn't that incredible? I think with a little more research I may be able to replicate the ability-"

"Tails! You were saying? About Mephiles?" I interrupted him. Normally I would let him carry on with his rambling (even though I never really listened) but now this what much more important.

"Oh yeah, sorry." Tails' scratched the back of his neck, a light blush on his cheeks. "Um, this could only have been left if Mephiles had entered his own mind - and possibly taken Shadow with him."

"What else?" I asked, knowing full well that although this information was informative, it wouldn't help me find Shadow. "You said two things."

"Shadow tells me that when he enters his own mind, he disappears from the spot he was standing - or at least to the human eye. In reality, he is still there, only we can't see him. Does that make sense? Effectively, whilst in his own mind, Mephiles is unable to move, as well as still technically being there, we just can't see him. It's like he's invisible, but still touchable."

A wide grin came upon my face, as I turned to start running with a simple "thanks Tails!". I knew that if I got back fast enough, I would be able to beat Mephiles' invisible ass into oblivion.

Although it had probably only be a matter of minutes, maybe ten considering my speed, the run back to that spot where I'd seen Mephiles seemed to take a lifetime. I couldn't help but wonder what I would do if he was already gone, and if then, what if Mephiles never came back? Would I never be able to find Shadow again?

No. I would run across every centermeter of the earth if it gave me a chance to run into Mephiles' invisible form and get Shadow back.

When I finally reached the small town square where I'd last ran into him, I began to realise that maybe I shouldn't have just ran out on Tails. The square we rather large, and I struggled to remember exactly where it was that I'd spoken to Mephiles. What's more, it was heavily crowded, so I couldn't just go running around punching and kicking the air in an attempt to find him, so as not to risk hurting someone and also so that I didn't appear to the general public as a lunatic.

"What should I do?" I asked myself, giving out a sigh. For a moment I thought of Dark again, something I did regularly when I was stuck, but then I realised in this situation Dark would probably just tell me that Shadow was more important to my reputation.

He is, isn't he? I told myself, though really I should never have asked. I already knew the answer. Of course he is. So just go and do it.

I was just about to take my own advice when I felt something get shoved into my back. I let out a gasp being flying forward, pushed to the ground with a weight on top of me.
