A dim-lit apartment in New York. Steam from a kettle clouds the upper air. The edges of the window are fogged by the cold city rain, its droplets tapping softly against the glass of the living room window. Lit only by an older television, its round screen displaying the image of two sportscasters.
"And that's it for our coverage of tonight's match." A woman's low voice resonates calmly but happily from its speakers.
"Thank you, Joan." An even lower voice of a gruff older gentlemen responds. "Before we close, I was made aware coming into work this morning. Today marks one year since Turbine Fighting's greatest tragedy."
"Oh, you are certainly right, Michael." The woman responds coldly with a bit of melancholy. "The most anticipated fight in years took a gruesome turn as one of the league's most skilled martial artists, Leon Ferril, took an unexpectedly fatal blow from his long time rival, Martin Wind."
The cold metal responses of kitchenware had stopped in response to this. Appearing in the open archway that connected the living room to the kitchen, a woman with scarlet hair leaned against it, her fanciful black nightgown swaying ever so slightly from the motion.
"That's exactly right. Two stars of the martial arts community gone in a single tragedy."
Michael's voice almost seemed to fade away, before coughing itself back into a more 'normal' tone.
"Never the less, rather than simply morbidly recall those events, I would like to ask that we all share a moment of silence for what is, luckily, the Turbine leagues only tragedy to date."
The tv grew quiet as the woman turned off, making her way to the coffee table where she had left her most treasured item. A scarlet book, its papers' gilded shined as she snapped her fingers and the living room lights turned on.
The woman opened the book quite a few pages in. Despite its outward appearance, the inner pages were like that of a notebook, littered with scribbles, scratches, notes, and symbols. Finally stopping at a page about halfway through, she smiled. In the center of the page was a list of names, some circled, some scratched out, and some just written as they were.
In the midst of the list lay three names:
Leon Ferril
Alice Lome
Martin WindThe woman's smile grew ever so slightly as she read these names.
"A year already..?"
