[The Voice]
During that period, I also saw Sura for the first time.
~
She was a tall, confident woman, covered almost completely in heavy-looking plain steel armor, save for a helm. Lazuli and Zirana said that it was a tradition in Toroma, her home country, not to hide your face from anyone, even the enemy. She had dark-brown hair that hung from her head as a series of tight-knit curls, except for a patch underneath, on the back of her head and near the base of her neck, which was straightened and flowed out from underneath the curls onto her armor, sitting between it and the sword on her back. The sword itself was monstrously huge. On the sword itself was a continuous light blue line traveling down the middle and splitting off into various, evenly-spaced circles just before the edge of the blade.
From the way she talked in introductions, she wore her heart on her sleeve. Not a single sliver of emotion ever seemed to be hidden on her face as she talked and listened.
That must cause issues with nobility, right? I had to ask.
Oh of course it does. However, Father likes her work and she is on par with Lazuli in terms of fighting power and skill. It would more effort than it's worth to the nobility to do anything about it. Zirana spoke to me internally so as to not interrupt Sura's discussion in the throne room we were in.
I see.
Yes, it's quite humorous honestly.
The conversation was about standard for most of what I'd gotten used to from others in the past month: a recap of her work and what she came across as well as her thoughts on it. It seemed that in peace time, the commandant and her troop would travel to various parts of Mezuzi to aid local trouble and to scout signs of threats. As I understood it, one year would be more nearby travels in which she returned monthly, while the next two years were devoted to farther distances, with her returning at longer, harder to estimate times. This cycle would continue, halted only be emergency military matters. Her troop was rather small at about 30 or so knights.
"Very good!" I heard the king speak from Zirana's left. "As always, you and your men have done excellent work. In one week we will discuss and dispatch you on a scouting mission to Beshazia."
"One week!?" Sura let out in a shocked outburst. Zirana's eyes weren't on Sura however but on one of the advisors, laughing to me in her mind.
He always has the hardest time hiding his shock from Sura's outbursts. He never learns. She said to me. I didn't notice it myself at first, but after she commented on it, I could see how his features had tightened a bit, trying to maintain a look of neutrality.
Better poker face than me, at least.
Haha. I can only imagine. All the while her gaze showed no signs to me of her own expression changing. I rarely saw it myself, save for when a mirror or something reflective was in view, but Zirana was quite skilled at controlling her emotions, in an interesting but almost unsettling way. While we were enjoying ourselves, Sura continued.
"Your Majesty," she spoke after reeling in her surprise, "is not our usual protocol to set out after a three day rest period?"
"Yes," the King spoke, unphased by Sura's outburst, "that is usually how we do things. However, in four days time, we will be celebrating the Unity Dinner. It would only be appropriate for the commandant to be there as well."
"But Your Majesty-" Sura pushed back with a vigorous concern.
"That's enough, Commandant!" To my surprise, it was not the king that spoke out, but Lazuli. "Do not disgrace your position."
