AUTHOR POV

By the time Yeonjun and Kai made it home it was dark outside, the clouds overcast and the moon shining bright in the deep blue sky.

Kai sat on his bed, picking at the sides of his fingers as he contemplated what to do with himself. His room was in darkness, the only light from the cracks between the curtains drawn over the windows to hide himself from the outside world.

It was eerily silent outside, a knock on Kai's door stunting his deep thoughts.

"Guess who?" Yeonjun remarked playfully as he swiftly closed the door behind him and moved to sit behind Kai who now sat bolt upright.

"I didn't mean to startle you," Yeonjun laughed quietly.

"No it's fine, I'm just on edge. That's all" Kai ushered, trying to sit back comfortably so Yeonjun wouldn't question him further.

"Because of me?" Yeonjun asked directly, his voice hinting that he already knew somewhat that he was correct but leaving it open-ended for Kai to deny to his heart's content.

"No no of course not" Kai denied in an instant.

"It's sad you know, I really like you and you seem to only be scared by me. Why are you scared of me? Do I look horrible? Have I offended you?" Yeonjun questioned, tears brimming in his dark eyes.

"No you don't look horrible at all and nor have you offended me, I'm so sorry if you felt that way" Kai immediately comforted, his hand subconsciously lifting to cup Yeonjun's teary face.

Yeonjun's eyes met with his own, the glassy tears welled in his eyes glistened as he leaned into Kai's hand.

"I'm so sorry" Kai apologised, removing his hand from the other's face as quickly as he could.

"It's alright," Yeonjun said, sitting back upright and creating a small distance between the pair.

Kai jolted upright, the door creaked open just enough for Beomgyu's head to peer around the corner, his eyes watery and wide.

Kai rushed to his door and ushered Beomgyu in closing the door behind him as softly as possible. He didn't even take a second to wonder what had just happened, it turns out Yeonjun was never in here after all.

"Are you alright Beomgyu?" Kai asked quietly, concerned in his own eyes.

Beomgyu just looked at him and sniffled. Kai watched as Beomgyu's eyes welled with tears and began to cry. Despite his tears, there was next to no sound, just streams of tears running down his pale face.

"Beomgyu, lovely, it's alright" Kai comforted, wiping Beomgyu's teary face.

"Yeo-" Beomgyu whispered, voice so scratchy that it sounded almost painful.

Kai's eyes widened, he never expected Beomgyu ever to utter a word. He was so used to his silence that the roughness of Beomgyu's poor voice echoed through his head.

Kai was half-heartedly hoping Beomgyu would keep talking but to his somewhat dismay Beomgyu's head dropped straight onto his chest, small tear drops landing on his shirt

Perhaps it was better that Kai let him get his tears out. Ever since he walked through the doors of this house Beomgyu always looked as though he could burst into tears at any point.

"What's wrong Gyu? You can tell me, honestly, anything" Kai assured, half comforting but also prying for his curiosity.

Beomgyu's head lifted, shaking quickly and pointing towards his ear and at the door.

You'd be surprised how many different things those three motions could mean.

No. I can't hear you. I want to go. I can't tell you. Someone's listening. I can't speak enough to tell you. You wouldn't understand. I don't want to.

Together so many reasons that required puzzling together that while it was an inconvenience to Kai it was clearly a constant irritant for Beomgyu.

Behind those sad eyes was pure frustration. His inability to communicate normally slowly ate at his temper every day. Every uncommunicated thought burned his throat to leave unspoken.

I'M TRYING TO TELL YOU BUT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. HE'S LISTENING TO ME, HE ALWAYS IS, HE'S WHY I CAN'T SPEAK.

WHY CAN'T YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I'M TRYING TO TELL YOU

IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT BUT PLEASE, PLEASE JUST UNDERSTAND PLEASE KAI UNDERSTAND ME

In reality, there was nothing but silence, Beomgyu's screaming stuck inside, those words of desperation silenced.

One second he was there, the next he was rushing out the door as quickly as he could, swinging the door shut behind him as his footsteps got quieter and quieter until silence fell again.

Kai jumped up, unconsciously running to follow the crying boy. However, when the door opened he wasn't greeted by an empty hallway or even Beomgyu.
