THE PRESENT

MARIÉ LAID IN HER BED, WHICH RESIDED IN A COLD EMPTY ROOM, SHE THOUGHT FOR A SAFE HAVEN THEY'D ATLEAST TRY TO MAKE IT'S OCCUPANTS FEEL SAFE.

The girl often found herself excluded from everyone else, looking back fondly at her time in the patch. She missed her friends, she missed Harriet.

She remembered the way the darker skinned girl would constantly pick on her and she'd reply in a witty manner. She also missed Sonya, who Marié often saw as a mother figure, despite the fact that she was almost certain the girl was much younger, however Sonya's maternal attitude towards the patch girls often comforted many new arrivals, Marié being one of them.

She had been in this 'safe haven' for a week now, and nearly all of her friends were gone, taken away to a safer, better place. The coffee-skinned girl found that hard to believe.

From the small glimpse she got during her escape at the world beneath them, Marié found it hard to believe such a place existed. Otherwise, why didn't all the maze trial victims get taken straight there? Why did they have to be sent to this giant waiting room.

Aris had soon become a friend. The two weren't close by any means, as when the boy arrived in the patch, which up until his arrival had only ever been girls, Marié quickly became suspicious of him, eventually though she warmed up to him a bit, after all he had saved their lives, which she believed she owed him for on numerous occasions.

she often thought about how the younger boy shared her suspicions of this whole ordeal, and well, she's kinda learnt to trust his instinct. And after all of her friends had been taken from them both, the two found comfort in each other's loneliness. A silent peace between them as they calculated ways to get their friends back.

The darker skinned girl was abruptly disrupted from her thoughts by a small rattle under her bed, she knew who it was, she and Aris used the vents so they could communicate past curfew, more often than not it was the small mousey boy, who wriggled his way into Marié's room, due to the fact he was more educated on the passages and (even though he'd deny it constantly) he managed to fit into them much easier than the black-haired girl.

"Aris, shut the fuck up, they'll hear you!" the moody teenage girl snapped, leaning down to quickly pull of the crate on the end of the vent.

"It's fine! It's fine!" the younger boy denied, standing up after sliding himself out from under the bunkbed which once belonged to Harriet and Sonya.

"What are you doing here? i thought we agreed every other night, not two nights in a goddamn row! we'll get busted and thrown out into whatever's left out there!"

"I know! i know! But, i heard Janson talking to one of the nurses, there's a new group out, all boys except one girl! just like our maze Mar! what if they know something?" Aris pleaded desperately, he clung onto the idea vigorously of someone, possibly one of the trial subjects, to know something.

"Maybe it's like one of the boys' sister or something, we can't just go up to these random sticks and ask them if they know what happened to our missing, possibly dead may i add, friends! you've seen these guys, Aris they brainwash everyone, make them believe they're safe so they can raise them like a lamb for slaughter!" The mocha-coloured girl snarkily replied, she knew better than to trust some random people who just escaped a near death experience, well, near death for some of them.

"look i know, that's why i'm thinking we study them, get to know them a little bit, find out if they think how we do you know? that this whole thing is one big test, one big trial, just like the maze!"

Aris was definitely headstrong, he had a plan and an idea and he stuck to it, even if it could get him killed, but that's just who he was, who he had been since the moment he stepped foot in the patch.

"we'll do bits over time okay? we're gonna find Harriet and Sonya and maybe Frankie. Only if i'm feeling generous though, i always got a bad feeling about that Pea-Head." Marié rolled her eyes at the thought of the ginger haired girl, she never liked her.

"Frankie was good!" the boy argued, his eyes slitting slightly as they stared at eachother.

"You're only saying that because you were like in love with her. Fact is, i knew her before you did and she's always been suspicious, always saw things no one else did, knew things we didn't, and we'd been trapped there for years! she gave us no reason to trust her Aris, and if you wanna brown-nose her even thought she's not here, feel free but i never liked that psycho ginger bitch." Marié huffed, climbing back up onto the top bunk and throwing herself back in exhaustion.

"now get the fuck out, i've heard your plan and it's worth a try, but i'm not doing it running on god knows how many hours sleep."

The younger boy huffed as he climbed off the bed beneath Marié and wiggled his way beneath the bed before a soft shuffling and clank! could be heard, signalling his departure.

And so, with Aris's moody exit, Marié got absorbed into her own mind again and twiddled her thumbs as she thought about what Aris said about the new group, until her mind wandered to Frankie. The newest newbie before Aris, the only one who knew exactly how everything worked at all times.

she never trusted that ginger bitch, not after everything went wrong when she got there.

It wasn't a coincidence, and somehow, someway, Marié knew, Frankie was not as far away as they thought.

AUTHORS NOTE
so as you can kinda tell, Marié has a very similar personality to Gally, excluding the crazy murderous rampage he went on. I wanted to sort of show how she was very mistrusting, which will be explained later on, and saw Frankie very similarly to how Gally viewed Thomas.

I want to build on her character though and sort of show how despite her untrusting nature, she's also very loyal to the people who were there for her and the people she cares for. She's a very complex character (like Gally) and will develop more throughout the book.

So please, even though you may not like the aggressive tone she often has, be patient as she will grow more as the book progresses, thank you!
