Iris (7) woke up to see that it was bright and sunny. As she turned to block the light from getting in her eyes, she knocked over the hockey stick that was leaning on the wall.

"Oh good morning Iris!"

:So Kai (12) is up already: She thought as she started walking towards the warm smell of food.

"I made some soup for you" Kai said as he handed the bowl to her.

As Kai handed her the bowl she could see that there were chunks of something. When she was seated on the floor with the bowl in front of her she pointed to one of the chunks and looked at kai.

"Oh do you want to know what's in the soup?" Kai asked

Iris nodded.

"It's rabbit."

Iris was unsure about whether she would eat it or not, but Since it smelled so good and to not make Kai sad she took a spoon full of just the broth and ate it and it was really good, so she thought she would try the meat. It was THE WORST thing in the world. The texture was all wrong, it was too chewy! She spit it out not taking another bite, She pointed to the chunks of meat to show Kai what was wrong. but Kai just looked hurt.

"It's alright Iris, it's okay if you don't like it I'll try better next time" Kai said looking like he was about to cry.

Iris could tell Kai was upset, but it's not like she could just tell him what's wrong! The soup was good! It was just the texture of the meat that was bad, and she wished she could tell Kai that. But in the end, giving up[ on explaining, she just used one of the few words Kai knew in sign language to tell him that she was sorry; then she went to sit outside waiting for him to get ready to gather supplies.

After a long day of gathering food and supplies they returned home. Kai was feeling a bit bothered about how he reacted when Iris didn't like the food, and how he just couldn't understand what she was trying to tell him, he wanted to try making up for it.

Iris wanted to apologize to kai but couldn't say it, it was infuriating. Why couldn't she just tell him! Why couldn't he understand what she wanted to say, so she wanted to make him a card, explaining with pictures what was wrong, and telling him she was sorry for making him sad. She had found some colored paper and pencils.

Later that day Kai came over to talk to Iris, just as she was finishing up her card Kai started talking.

"Iris can I talk to you about something?"

Iris looked up from her drawing and nodded her head.

Kai continues " I know that since you cant talk to express how you feel you try to in other ways, and I'm sorry that I haven't been doing my best to understand either. So I want to sit down and try to understand right now"

Iris saw this as the perfect opportunity and pulled out her card and handed it to Kai. He sat there for a good while making sure he fully understood the drawings, and got that it was the rabbit meat and not his cooking that she didn't like. In return for the card he gave her a note book that he found earlier that day.

"Now whenever im being a little bit blind you can tell me what's wrong, in there" Kai said nicely.

Iris was very happy, and hugged her brother tightly. Just before bed the first thing she asked in the book, was if she could teach Kai sign language starting tomorrow morning. Kai nodded his head and told her to go to bed.
