The first day of summer. I can't believe that my time as a junior was already over. Come fall I'd be a senior and applying for college. My part time job at Frozone's Froyo will keep me busy somedays and others will be occupied by my BFF Allison. Allison and I go way back. We've been friends since the third grade. We immediately took a liking to each other after I told her how to play soccer, and she gave me fashion advice. Since then, we've been inseparable.
"Katherine?"
"Yes, Mom?" I answered.
"Allison is here,"
"Coming," Allison usually drives me to work because my Mom only has one car ever since my Dad left.
"Ready?" Allison smiled. "After I drop you off, I have to go to Millie's Boutique and see if I got the job."
"C'mon, we both know you got the job. There's no one around that has better fashion sense than you." I said. It's true, Allison has a flawless sense of fashion that can incorporate almost anything into an outfit.
"What about Madison?"
Madison Finkle is the most popular girl at school excluding Allison. Madison, Allison, and I also go way back. But not quite in the friendly way, if you know what I mean.
"Madison? You have nothing to worry about."
"I couldn't live with myself if Madison got the job instead of me."
"Stop complaining," I said. "We're here. Good luck, not that you need it."
"I'll be back in four hours to pick you up."
"See you then," I walked around to the back of Frozone's Froyo to find the employee entrance.
I pulled open the door after scanning my key card. Security may seem a little excessive, but Frozone insisted that key cards were less expensive than getting employees a key.
"Frozone, I'm here."
"Good, on time as always. I want you to man the weighing station today."
"On it," I tied my apron around my waste and slipped on my hat.
Afternoon shifts at Frozone's, like mine, are always busy. At Least during the summer, when the weather is really hot. I guess that's why Frozone hired me. I work well under the pressure that comes with having a line. It also helps that I'm fast.
During the last hour of my shift, I couldn't believe who showed up.
"Hello, Madison." I forced myself to smile.
"Katherine," She said acknowledging me.
I grabbed her frozen yogurt and set it on the scale. "Celebrating?"
"No. If your asking if I got the job at Millie's, I decided to turn it down. I think I'd rather have a job somewhere else."
I handed Madison her cup with a slip saying how much it weighs. "Have a nice day."
Madison walked off without replying. I bet she got turned down.
After another half hour, I walked into the parking lot and spotted Allison's car.
"I got the job!" She yelped as I sat down.
"I knew you would. Guess what?"
"Tell me,"
"Madison came in about half an hour ago and said that she decided she didn't want to work at Millie's."
"I heard some of the other employees saying she got turned down."
"That's what I assumed," I said. "She didn't seem very thrilled."
"I suppose she wouldn't." We laughed until we got to my house.
"Is that..."
"It is," Allison interrupted. Her dad's car was parked in my driveway. We think our parents have started dating since they're by single. But they claim that they're just friends.
"Well let's go inside. May be my Mom made dinner."
"I hope so. She is a way better cook than my Dad."
I'm not sure about Allison, but I secretly hoped our parents would get together. That way Allison and I would be sisters. Plus Mom wouldn't have to worry about the bills. Allison's dad has enough money to pay for a family of twenty if need be.
Allison and I walked inside.
"Girls, we are in the kitchen."
"Please let there be dinner," Allison whispered to herself.
"Hello Mom, Bill."
"Hey Katherine,"
"Everyone, guess what." Allison demanded.
"What?" Mom and Bill said in unison. I already knew what she was going to say.
"I got the job!"
"Awesome," Bill said.
"That's lovely," Mom said. "Let me grab the lasagna and dish is up some."
"Yes," Allison said.
"So... we've decided that we should tell you guys that Helen and I are dating." Bill said.
"I knew it!" Allison and I said.
"We're also taking a trip this weekend and thought that you two should do something fun together." Mom said.
"We should go camping," I told Allison.
"What? Why camping?"
"It's fun," I said.
"You guys should go," Bill said.
"I agree," Mom said.
"Fine," Allison gave in.
"I think I know just the forest." I said.
