(After the prologue's events)
"Katherine, what just happened?"
"Honestly, I have no idea." I stared at Allison's eyes dumbfounded.
Suddenly her eyes flashed a brighter purple and then changed to their normal green.
"Your eyes, they're blue again."
"Your's are green now," I said. "Maybe we were just imagining things."
"Maybe,"
"Let's get some sleep." I shuddered at the thought of the glowing tree, as I slipped inside the tent.
.......................................................................
"Katherine, wake up!"
"What!" I jolted awake.
"It's time to get up. I don't know where you packed the food. So technically, I've been starving for the past twenty minutes because I couldn't find the food that you packed."
"Allison, it's in the blue bag. Just please stop complaining." I said. "About last night,"
"Let's not talk about it. We were exhausted. Just chalk it up to imagination or hallucinations. Your choice."
"Fine, but I'm curious." I admitted. How could we both have had the same dream or hallucination?
"You always are." Allison munched on an apple. "Why couldn't we have packed muffins? Man, I wish this apple was a banana muffin."
Allison's eyes glowed a soft purple that changed to a deep violet. With the blink of an eye, the color was gone and her apple was now a muffin.
"Holy..." I started. "Do you still think we were imagining things?"
"Oh my god! I just turned an apple into a muffin." Allison turned the muffin around in her hands.
"Taste it."
"Are you kidding me? It could kill me. Besides last time I listened to you we were zapped by the tree."
I grabbed the muffin from Allison's hands and took a bite. "Banana, just like you wished."
"You don't think..."
"Wish for something else."
"Ok, I wish I had a strawberry smoothie."
Allison's eyes shined purple, and before I knew what happened there was a smoothie in her hand.
Allison took a sip. "Strawberry,"
"I wonder if this has anything to do with last night. Our eyes glow just like the tree before it zapped us."
"We can figure that part out later. I just found out that I can wish for things. You try."
"Uhh... I wish I had a waffle." Nothing happened. "I guess it doesn't work for me." I shoved aside my disappointment.
"Well I'll wish you a waffle. I wish Katherine had a stack of three waffles."
Allison's eyes glowed as a plate of waffles appeared on my lap.
I grabbed a fork from my bag and took a bite. "Delectable,"
"This is insane, we must be on a prank show. I bet you're in on it."
I sighed. "How would somebody make our eyes change color and make an apple change into a muffin?"
"You're right," Allison huffed. "How come you can't do it then?"
"I don't know," It seemed unfair to me that Allison got to be even more special than me. She already was the popular and fashionable one. I guess it was just my luck.
"I wish Katherine had powers."
I looked at Allison. "You're eyes didn't glow."
"So I have limitations,"
"Maybe you can't wish for things to happen to other people." I suggested.
"What about the waffles?"
"Good point," I agreed. "Try something else.
"I wish Katherine had freckles." Allison's eyes glowed. "It worked."
"Why?"
"Maybe I couldn't give you powers because you already have them." Allison guessed.
My hopes lifted. I might just get to be special. I took another bite of my waffles. "Even if that was true, how am I supposed to figure out what it is?"
"I haven't a clue."
"So I just have to blindly hope that someday I'll find out what they are."
"Basically,"
"This sucks." I groaned.
"Not for me." Allison said. "I wish I was fully ready for the day."
Allison's eyes glowed yet again. In a flash she was dressed and her blonde hair in a braid.
"Why don't you wish for something useful, like a laptop with an internet connection."
"Fine, but at least tell me why?"
"You'll see."
After Allison wished for my request, I fired the laptop up. I clicked on the search engine and typed in Massachusetts witch trials.
"Smart thinking," Allison peered over my shoulder. "I never did believe in witchcraft, but maybe it's time to reconsider."
"I don't know what I'm looking for."
"We can always do this later, like when we figure out if you have a power."
"Why don't you wish for me to know what my power is?" I felt proud of myself for thinking of the solution.
"I wish Katherine knew what her power was." Nothing happened. "Man, we really need to find out what the restrictions are."
"Yeah," I have to admit, I was bummed.
"I can't wait to tell Jackson." Allison melted at the thought of him. He is the most popular guy at school and is also Madison's crush. Did I mention Allison and him sort of have a thing?
"Hold on! We can't tell anyone."
"Why not?" Allison pouted.
"Seriously?" I looked at Allison, giving her the answer is really obvious look. "Do want to become a lab rat?"
"No, but Jack wouldn't tell."
"You guys aren't even serious. What happens if he gets upset and tells. That would hurt both of us."
"Fine." Allison gave in. "I won't tell anybody."
"Good. Neither will I."
I sighed. What are we going to do. Allison has an unpredictable gift, while I possibly have a gift. Key word: possibly.
"What should we do now?" Allison asked.
"I think we should go home." Allison gave me a look that screamed thank god, but why? "Both of our parents are gone, so we can choose a house and crash there. We have more resources available to us in town, plus it will be much more comfortable in a bed than a sleeping bag."
"I see your point." Allison agreed. "I wish we our stuff was packed up."
After Allison did her trick I said, "You can't keep doing that."
"And why not?" Allison said, clearly irritated.
"We have no idea what we are doing. There could be consequences." I explained.
Allison looked away. "You're just jealous."
I gasped, surprised that she would say that to me. "Even if I knew what my ability was, the same thing would apply to me. We need to be cautious."
"I know it's just... so thrilling." Allison's shoulders slumped. "I'm sorry."
"It's okay, I just don't want you to get hurt."
"Does this mean we have to walk back to my car?"
"I'm afraid so."
"Ughhh!" Allison groaned.
I just laughed. No matter what happens to us, at least we'll be together.
