"I killed my parents." I'm glad that Nightwell gave me the calming draught because if he didn't, I might've had another episode.
"It wasn't you. It was the Obscurus." Nightwell explains. I look at him, "What happened after that? How did the house end up on fire?"
"After MACUSA saw the severity of the situation, we had to create a coverup. After I wiped your memory, I put you back in your bed and set the house on fire to hide the damage you had done. Then No-Majs would be able to deal with the situation from there."
"That's why you were there that night."
"I was first on the scene. I had to protect you."
"Why? Why do I matter so much?"
"Like I said before, Obscurials above the age of ten are so rare they can be counted on one hand, and you are one of the few. If MACUSA wasn't there to help you that night you would have been sent away to a No-Maj prison where you would kill more people and be left to rot.
"Nobody at MACUSA wanted either of those things to happen. So, we brought you here, to Hogwarts where you could have a chance to live."
"But there's nothing you can do to help me."
"That's true. There is no clear cure. Dumbledore believes that creating a place of belonging and love can cure an Obscurial. That's what he has tried to provide you with here."
"It obviously, didn't work."
Nightwell puts a hand on my leg, "It's too early to tell. There is still a chance you can be cured."
"But why you, Nightwell? Why were you there? Why are you here?" I ask.
"Here at Hogwarts?"
"No. Here in general. Here in Britain. Here with me"
He smiles at his feet, "I was asked to transfer by MACUSA after you were brought to Hogwarts. They put me in charge of your case at the Ministry of Magic. Anything that happens to you is my responsibility."
I scoff, "So that's why you care so much. Your job is on the line. You don't care about my well-being or a cure"
"There is more to it than that, Charlie. I can't explain it to you yet, but one day I will."
"No, you don't have to explain. I get it." I spit, "You're hoping that a cure will be found because then you'll be granted a nice shiny title at the Ministry."
"Charlie-"
"Go. Just go. I want to be alone." I look away from him. He stands from his seat, "I won't be able to come back for some time, Charlie."
"I don't care if you never come back. Go. Have fun doing your Ministry paperwork about me. Make sure you make me sound good." I wave him off.
He sighs, "I'll come back as soon as I can."
"Don't bother. I don't want to see you."
"One last thing, Charlie." Nightwell stands in the opening of the curtain, "You can tell no one of what we discussed today. It is classified as Ministry intel. Promise me."
"Yeah, whatever. Just leave already."
-
"You must keep the calming draught on you at all times." Madam Pomfrey instructs as I pull my robes on, "Yes. I understand. I'll be very careful."
"You are very lucky that they are letting you back in the school." She gives me one last potion to drink, "Remember, Green, it may be difficult readjusting in Hogwarts. If you find yourself struggling, no one would shame you for coming back to stay in the hospital wing. It's only been a couple of weeks after all."
