My office door opens, revealing Holden at the doorway."Did you handle it?"I ask as I drown another glass of whiskey.
I drank it like water, not even feeling the burn in my throat anymore.
"I think you need to stop,Orpheus."He takes a few hesitantly steps to me.
"I asked you something, did you handle it?"I ask him again through my teeth.
He looks at me with disbelief. He shakes his head, looking at me with disappointment but I couldn't care more about his opinion."I left them at her house as you told me."
"Have you taken your meds?"He asks as he strolls around my desk, taking the bottle of whiskey out of my hands and settling it at the top drawer.
"That's none of your business."
"Fuck yes it is,you are my friend and I care about you."
"Was she there?"I wondered out loud.He groans as he throws himself at the seat in front of my desk.
He sighs ."Who?"
"Liliya."
His eyebrows furrowed while deep in thought."No,neither that dog."
I don't question further. If that dog is missing, they must be out for a walk.
But this early in the morning and after a storm?
Something's wrong. There's no way she's out at this hour.
"I don't want to upset you more but you fucked up."I ignore him.
"She's so beautiful, beautiful like a fucking angel."I nod my head, approving my own words.
"Damn, you must be really really drunk."I throw him a pointed look, drowning the last sip of my drink.
"I'm leaving."
"Where the fuck are you going?!There is a storm happening outside."He puts his hands on my shoulders, but I shake them off.I take my helmet in my hands and I turn around meeting his worried face.
I force a smile to reassure him that everything is going to be fine.Or perhaps that's what I wanted to hear. That everything is going to be fine.
He sighs as he throws me the bike's keys."Go get your girl, boss."
My girl.My girl.My girl
"Shut it."He laughs and I try to hide my own smile. My girl.
One way or another,Liliya will forgive me.I'll do anything in my power. There's no staying away.If she's ever in danger,I'll sacrifice my own self for her.
I open the front door and I head to my bike.Rain drops fell on my helmet's glass and I wipe it away impatiently.I didn't have time for anti-distractions,I should have been already there.
This story between us will either have a happy ending or two worlds will be destroyed She is so important that I would sacrifice even the remaining self that it's been left. But for Liliya I would sacrifice me again and again.
My hands grip the handlebars as I pick up the speed. I pass the residential area of the town, keeping in mind the route to her house.
I come to a stop, my breath is heavy and it seems unimaginable to inhale. I take off the helmet, with the desire to exhale.
Maybe I should have thought about what exactly I was going to confess to her first. How can I justify not leaving the town? That it was all a lie because I was bothered by the way I felt for her?
It was too late to turn back, besides I didn't want to, I wouldn't leave here without seeing her. I hated to want her but my hate wouldn't stop me from claiming her.
I open the wooden door and I head to the entry. I knock decisively but there was no response. Maybe she was sleeping? But Holden said no one was home. I open the door only to find it unlocked.
There were books everywhere, photos with a woman and the dog.
I bring myself back to reality as I head deeper into the room. But still no sign of life.
I try to open the door to my right, only to find it locked, strange, I try the next door, and with great success it was open, I go in only to see an empty bed.
My hand tightens on the knob, she could be anywhere.
I walk out of the house angry, angry at myself, angry at everything, where could she be? Certainly not in the city, everything is closed because of the storm.
I start my bike and as I was about to pull off, a tag on my foot stopped me. I look down in amazement, to see the last thing I expected, the little mouse. I kneel down in despair and hug him. I actually felt sorry for the dog because it was so wet.We got into the house and I call Holden to come over so he won't be alone while I'm gone. I cover him with two blankets I found and I quickly got out, heading once again to my bike.
As I drove, the waves got even louder. That's how I knew I was close.
"The ocean is my safe place." I knew she was there,I felt it.
I hope I'm right because I can't think of another place she would be.
Getting off the bike I found that there was no one here. Only the strong wind and the waves hitting the shore.I let out a loud curse.Disappointed with her absence,I turn back around towards my bike. But I stop in my trucks, when I caught a weak groan.
And there she was.
With wet hair hiding her face, Her body motionless almost dead in appearance. I gather her in my arms, her skin cold and I sweep her hair away from her eyes.I place my head on her chest, listening to her heart beating irresistibly.Thank god. I scoop her in my arms and I get up, keeping in mind not to hurt her.
I call Holden and I tell him to come here right away with his car. I take off my jacket, wrapping it around her shoulders. Blood was dripping from her forehead and I kiss her head gently to calm her down.
And right there I promised myself that I would never see her in such a state ever again.
