"Why don't you stay for dinner, Lucas?" Topanga asked.
"Sorry Mrs. Matthews, but I gotta go home to my mama," Lucas replied.
"I'll walk you out!" Riley and I offered at the same time. I glared at her, and she surrendered. "I'm going home anyway."
"You can do it, then," Riley insisted as she rolled her eyes. Seems to me someone still has a crush on a ranger named Rick.
"Let's go Huckleberry," I nodded towards the door. We walked out in comfortable silence, until he gripped my shoulders.
"Why doesn't Riley like me anymore?" he gritted out. It wasn't fair. Riley had him, even if she didn't want him. Why couldn't Josh be like this? "What have I done wrong?"
"Sometimes people don't know what they have until they lose it," I replied. He seemed as if he were on the verge of crying, and I stepped forward and hugged him. I wanted to comfort and say she had feelings for him, but I wouldn't want to give him false hope, because in the end, all he'll get is disappointment and pain.
"It's been nearly two years, Maya." It's been five years.
"I know." I let him go, and we walk out onto the sidewalk. "Alright bye, Huckleberry!"
"Bye Maya!" We head to each our way, and I walked towards my house. It wasn't really far, just a few blocks. I noticed a car following me, and I stopped. The window rolled down and I saw a familiar face.
"Josh?" I asked.
"Maya?" he replied.
"What are you doing? The Matthews's apartment is back there."
"I happened to see you cross the street. Do you want a ride home?"
"Yes! I mean, yeah." I opened the passenger door and got into the car. "New car?"
"Yeah, just got it a few months ago." I never realized how awkward it was with him. "So how's your mom?"
"I don't want to talk about her." To be honest, I didn't know her. Yes, I knew she was probably working right now, but I hadn't really talked to her. I guess driving people away runs in the family. Typical.
"I saw you and a boy hugging in the lobby."
"That was Lucas."
"Riley's boyfriend?"
"Nah, they broke up a long time ago."
"Are you dating him?"
"Why...you jealous?" I smirked.
"No, just curious."
Another awkward silence. I decided to ask him what was bugging me the whole day. "How was the date with Missy?"
"You thought it was a date?" He laughed. "We got kicked out of Topanga's. I don't think she likes Missy. I drove her home after that."
"Do you...do you like her?"
"Do you like Lucas?"
"He's pretty cute."
"Oh. Don't let him hurt you."
"I wish someone told me that when I fell for you." And with that, I left the car and went into my house where I would remain alone.
